Kolymbithres beach

Located on the northern coast of Paros in the Gulf of Naoussa. It got its name thanks to bizarre rock formations that separate natural cavities filled with water (Kolymbithres). Granite vertical rocks are unusually picturesque and reliably protect tiny bays from currents and strong winds, and the surrounding landscape resembles a lunar landscape. The beauty of the Kolymbithres beaches and their relative solitude attracts a huge number of tourists to these places, who can comfortably accommodate both in equipped areas and among wild boulders similar to giant sculptures.

Beach description

Kolymbithres is situated in the western part of Naussa Bay and is represented by several small cozy bays separated by rocks and boulders of fantastic shapes. The beach is covered with the finest golden sand, the sea is transparent, rather shallow and calm, and water entry is safe.

In comparison with other island beaches, it is rather calm and windless here, so Kolimbitres is a perfect option for family recreation with kids who can play in shallow waters for hours, and build sand statues. Adults are offered the wide range of water games, they can rent sports equipment, boats, kayaks, and hydrocycles. Scuba-divers may investigate coastal cliffs and sea grottos, and people enjoying diving from cliffs will adore Kolymbithres.

The beach is visually divided into several parts: in the center, small wild bays are located, surrounded with giant boulders, and equipped zones with deck chairs and umbrellas are located on the sides. The price on them is slightly higher than average throughout the island, and only tourists who came earlier catch a chance to use them in the high season. As a rule, all comfortable places are already occupied by noon, and visitors who are late have to find some place between the rocks and use their own towels.

You can make a light meal in beach tavernas and snackbars, and drink delivery service is available. There are no shower stalls or changing cabins, and visitors can use water closets only in public areas. There is also a free parking lot that doesn't have enough room for everybody in the high season. In such cases, tourists leave their cars just by the roadside, causing traffic jams rather often.

You can get to Kolymbithres in several ways. Scheduled buss go from the closest settlements, and in order to get from Naussa port to the beach, use water taxi (5-7 minutes only). The most important thing is to watch the time and to take care of round-trip tickets. The lovers of hiking can use the picturesque coastal path from Naussa about three kilometers long, and enjoy fantastic views of the bay and the neighboring islands on the way.

When is the best time to go?

Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season  begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.

Useful information

Certainly, the most popular place in the vicinity of Kolymbithres is the resort town of Naoussa, which used to be an ordinary fishing village. Now there is a large port, the second most important on Paros, which connects it by sea with other Greek islands. Around it, there are numerous fish taverns with amazing local cuisine, where you can taste octopus dishes and other seafood specialties. Every year from July to August, large-scale festivals of fish and wine are held in Naoussa, which attract not only numerous tourists, but also the native inhabitants of Hellas.

The village is very cozy and authentic and offers unhurried walks along the shady cobbled streets surrounded by ancient buildings. And just a kilometer from it is one of the main shrines of the island - the monastery of Agio Athanasios.
