Plengkung beach

Plengkung Beach is a long beach on the southeastern outskirts of Java, recognized as one of the best surfing spots in the world. It is located in the eastern part of Grajagan Bay in the territory of Alas Purvo National Park in the south of Banyuvanga and is often referred to as the “miracle of seven giant waves”, while their conquerors usually call this shore G-land. It was the stable majestic waves that gave this coast the glory of the true Mecca of surfers in Indonesia.

Beach description

The first tourist surfers on this coast appeared in 1972, and it was here that the first surf campsites appeared, which later spread to other parts of the world. In the surfer name of the beach "Land G" are hidden three main characteristics of this coast: majestic waves (Grand), emerald expanses (Green) and the name of the bay itself in which it is located. Although, according to another version of the origin of this appellation, this is due to the fact that the long curved coastline of Plengkung Beach resembles such an English letter in shape.

A number of factors testify to the fact that this beach is the best place for professional surfers:

  • after Hawaii it is the second place in the world where you can enjoy the constancy of very high and long waves;
  • waves here can reach heights of 4-7 m with an interval of about 5 minutes and a length of 2 km;
  • seven-layer left-hand waves of an elongated shape are constantly moving towards the coast, forming an ideal wave "tube";
  • at least 5 international surfers championships have already passed here

The peak of the highest waves in Plengkung falls on April-August, when strong sea trade winds blow. During this period, the most stable high waves are formed during tidal currents. Also at Plengkung 3 types of waves are distinguished: Kong – the highest (6-8 m), exclusively for professionals, Speedis – 5-6 m high and Many – 3-4 m high, which are suitable for mid-level surfers.

In addition to the conditions for professional surfing, this Indonesian beach also attracts vacationers with picturesque landscapes. All of its long coast is covered with clean white sand and surrounded by an emerald of dense tropical forest, creating the illusion of remoteness from the whole world. Therefore, it is also an ideal place on the island of Java, where you can appreciate the isolation from noisy tourist centers and enjoy the atmosphere of solitude and relaxation.

When is it better to go?

The air temperature throughout the year differs little and keeps within + 28-30 degrees. In the evening and at night, it is slightly cooler, but the thermometer rarely falls below +23 degrees. The water temperature is also stable. In order to avoid the rainy season (months from December to March), it is better to visit the country from May to August.

Infrastructure

Plengkung Beach is famous for its partial isolation from the outside world. Therefore, one should not even think about developed infrastructure here. Unless in some parts of the beach there are centers for renting equipment for surfers.

There are several traditional surf camps near the coast. For example, the closest accommodation option is G-Land Joyo's Surf Camp to Banyuvangi, from which the center of the beach is about 3 km. But if the plans do not include camping on this wild coast, it is best to opt for a one-day water excursion here from Bali, where you can find a wide selection of accommodation for any budget.

Useful information

Most often they get to this beach by boat as part of organized excursions from the island of Bali. Although by land it is half a day's journey from almost any popular tourist destination in Bali. The most optimal, albeit rather lengthy option for traveling to the beach by car is along the Banyuvangi-Kalipahit highway.

You need to get to Tegaldlimo, and from there – to Pos Pankur, located on the territory of Alas Purvo. From it to the beach you need to walk 2 km on foot or rent a scooter to travel to it. Another option is to get from Banyuvangi to Benkuluk, and from there get to Granjagan Bay, where you can rent a boat for a trip to the Plengkung beach itself.

A visit to Plengkung Beach can be combined with a trip to Alas Purvo National Park, in whose territory it is located. This protected area is one of the oldest natural rainforests on the island. On the coast itself, you can admire some of the most spectacular sunsets on the island of Java, and in the surrounding forest you can find a picturesque waterfall.
