Hidden Gems on the Southwest Coast of England
England boasts some of the most stunning scenery in the world, with grassy hills, ancient ruins and historic landmarks to name just a few. The Southwest Coast of England in particular is especially appealing, given its history, culture and even unique dialect. In this article, we’ll be covering a few especially eye-catching hidden gems should you plan on visiting any time soon.
Fistral Beach
Nestled neatly along the coastline of Newquay, Cornwall; Fistral Beach has featured in more ‘Most Beautiful’ lists than you can shake a stick at, which might not make it hidden, but it’s certainly a gem. With a stunning stretch of sand, idyllic views for miles beyond the coast on clear days and its own dedicated patrol force maintaining the condition of the beach – it’s certainly a hidden gem that could be easily overlooked in favour of noisier tourist spots. As far as beaches in Cornwall go, it’s certainly one of the best.
Lusty Glaze Beach
With some of the cleanest white sand in the country, views of the ocean and a stunning border of cliffs and grass – Lusty Glaze beach is another hidden gem worth spending hours at. You’ll often find a variety of marquees installed during the summer, as it’s recently become one of the most prominent wedding hotspots, with Instagrammers photographing it thousands of times and many agreeing not to share the name to keep it private.
Porthcurno Beach
With nothing but greenery on three sides and blue on the other, Porthcurno is one of those places that most people won’t be able to get enough of. It’s easily accessed with a quick walk, but secluded enough to enjoy a little privacy, especially toward the cliff-side; this is by far one of the most appealing little spots in all of Cornwall.
Tintagel (Castle and Grounds)
Is there any English folklore quite as famous as the legend of King Arthur? Tintagel Castle is believed to have been his personal residence for a time and if you don’t mind a long, winding walk along rough terrain to reach the castle ruins, we’re sure you’ll love spending a day out here. There are also souvenir shops nearby, as well as Merlin’s Cave underneath, which can be accessed from the coastline – just be sure to avoid high tide or risk getting swept away. Historic Cornwall doesn’t get any better than this.
The Healing Waters
If you’re planning on sticking near Tintagel, the Healing Waters should definitely be a destination on your list. For centuries, if not millennia, the three stunning waterfalls that pool together are said to possess the power to heal – and as if that wasn’t enough, you’ll also find a variety of beauty spots for photos and memories.
Bodmin Jail
Home to some of the most catastrophic horrors in English history, Bodmin Jail is no longer active, but certainly terrifying. Fortunately, it has been nicely appointed in recent years, with a souvenir shop and access to varying levels and depths of the jail itself. Some say that they hear the screams of ancient prisoners wailing for release from their punishment, while others consider the jail to be one of the most tranquil places they have ever visited. We will let you stop by and decide for yourselves.
