Fortress Museum in Marmaris
Tourists come to Marmaris not only for swimming in a bay with clear water and famous Turkish hospitality. There are also historical monuments, thanks to which you can learn the history of these lands.
One of these monuments is the Marmaris Castle, which was built thousands of years ago. The exact date of the construction of the castle is unknown, archaeologists cannot even determine the century.
There is an assumption that the castle-fortress was erected by the Ionians long before our era. The structure was built purely for the defense of their territory. The castle was destroyed during one of the wars, but a copy of it was created especially for tourists.
Now it houses a museum. The elevated position, rough masonry and battlements give the impression of the grandeur and power of the structure.
How do I find the castle?
The fortress is located in the center of Marmaris, the landmark is the monument to Ataturk. Nearby is the pier and the famous Grand Bazar. The castle is visible from almost anywhere in the center of Marmaris.
You won't be able to drive directly to the castle entrance; the way to the museum runs through a series of narrow streets. It may take a little time to find the entrance to the museum.
But during this time, tourists will be able to appreciate the real Turkish flavor: men playing backgammon, women hanging underwear, children frolicking carelessly. The streets and houses are a bit like Spain, especially if you then look at them from the height of the fortress.
What's in the fortress-museum?
The entrance to the fortress is paid, you need to pay 12 liras for each tourist. A colorful ticket is issued, which is valid for visiting the exposition until 18:30. The territory of the museum is small, but 7 halls are compactly located here. The halls display ethnographic and archaeological monuments, exhibit repositories and art galleries. One of the halls is a recreated old Turkish dwelling.
All exhibits are signed and described in Turkish and English. It is possible to photograph exhibits, but without a flash. Flashes from cameras and smartphones are slowly destroying artifacts that are hundreds of years old.
Under the glass showcases there are ancient figurines, coins, clay lamps, large and miniature amphorae. Large amphoras transported wine and olive oil, small ones - medicines and essential oils.
Separate expositions are dedicated to the seventh president of Turkey, as well as the famous Roksolana. The castle regularly hosts cultural and artistic events.
Cannons and cannonballs from the times of the Ottoman Empire lie right on the street. Dozens of flowers and trees have been planted on the territory of the museum.
Preparing for the excursion
It is recommended to take drinking water on the tour, as it is not sold on the territory of the museum. It is better to choose comfortable clothes and wear shoes without high heels.
A staircase leads to each room, the steps of which do not differ in their ideal surface. It is advisable to cover your head so as not to get sunstroke. There is a free toilet on the territory of the fortress-museum.
We hope that you will visit the fortress in Marmaris, because from above there is a magnificent view of this tourist city! It seems that the fortress guards the Turkish resort even now, but at the moment its function is purely decorative.
