Saint Markella beach
Agia Markella is a large beach, stretching in front of the monastery of the same name, located in the north of Chios, 35 km from the island's capital. The beach and the village are named after the protector and patroness of the entire coast of Chios Saint Markella. A small path from the beach leads to the place of martyrdom of Marcella, where every year on July 22, a large pilgrimage takes place. According to local legend, sincerely asking for help from the Saint on this day, you can get her help. Many people share stories of miraculous healings after turning to St. Markella.

The endless and specious beach is located at the foot of the cliffs and consists of sand and tiny pebbles of dark grey, almost black. Agia Markella is also popular with its cold blue waters of the Aegean Sea and deep sea bottom. The waves in this part of the island are calm, therefore, the conditions fro swimming are ideal.
And the area of this beach is amazing and picturesque, the endless sea offers a breathtaking view of the historic island of Psara, and from the other side the beach is surrounded by high cliffs, crowned with the most beautiful churches of Agia Markella. There are also taverns in the surroundings of the beach serving local fresh seafood.
When is the best time to go?
