Comarca Kuna Yala beach

The Comarca Kuna Yala stretches for 380 km along the Carribean coast of Panama. Kuna Indians that practice fishing, lobster breeding, coconut cultivation, souvenir crafting for tourists live in this autonomous region.

Beach description

The Comarca Kuna Yala Beach is covered in white sand. The descent is smooth and the sea bottom is sandy. The water is calm, transparent and clean. The coast looks like a picture of tropical heaven - the white beach line, with the bright blue sky and sea as its background, magnificent coconut palm trees rising above it.

The typical tourist infrastructure - sunbeds, umbrellas, showers - is not present here. Instead you can lay on the towel or in a hammock that is tied to the palms, just like locals prefer to relax. It's advised to bring an umbrella with you.

Among the available activities are swimming, snorkeling, fishing, surfing. It's recommended to take care of equipment beforehand. There are no rental stores on the beach.

The calm and safe sea, as well as the lack of stinging and poisonous snakes could have made this beach perfect for children, but the impression of this heavenly island far away from civilization might be ruined by the not so comfortable conditions. It's best to bring a friend of a group of friends to the Comarca Kuna Yala Beach.

When is it better to go

Favorable time for a beach holiday in Panama begins in the second half of December and lasts until April. Air temperature during this period does not exceed + 32 °C, water temperature – not lower than + 23 °C. It is noteworthy that in the Caribbean Sea the water is several degrees warmer than on the Pacific coast.

Infrastructure

Where to stop

The region became a tourist destination relatively recently so the tourist infrastructure isn't very well-developed. Hotels aren't present on all the islands, there aren't many restaurants and cafes, and you'll have to drive off-road and then take a boat to reach the white beaches. You can stay in a lodge hotel on Comarca Kuna Yala that consists of several bungalows on the coast or rent a house from the locals, but you won't see your typical comfortableness of a 5-star hotel there. There's no hot water even in the hotels, which however isn't a massive problem for the tourists.

When choosing a bungalow, take note of the floor cover that may be a layer of sand or wooden decking. Insects can be living in the sandy surface, so wooden decking is more preferable. Doors in bungalows aren't exactly a thing, so anyone can enter the building if they wish. It's advised against bringing valuable things on these islands.

Those who prefer comfortableness should choose a hotel in Panama City, Colon or Gamboa and drive to the Comarca Kuna Yala Beach every day.

What to do

The beach is attractive to those who want to escape civilization even for a short period of time and enjoy a calm vacation among the untouched nature. You can live in tropical wilderness and enjoy the birds singing and the sea. You can also take a trip to the islands on a rented boat of the San Blas archipelago.

How to get there

You can get to the Comarca Kuna Yala Beach from the Albrook Airport to one of the four airports in the region.
