Beach description

Atauro is a small island located 25 km away from Dili. It is a reserved area the nature of which remained almost unchanged. Tropical plants grow along the beach. The sparkling coral sand covers the beach washed by clear waters. Underwater life near the island is surprisingly rich and versatile diving. The large picturesque coral reef is located in the beach area.

The eco village of Tya Coin situated right on the beach offers tourists a rather wide range of services. Here, you can make a light meal and stay for a night. Washing rooms and water closets are equipped near the mini hotel. The hotel provides the possibility to rent diving and snorkeling equipment, to hire guides for hiking or bike rides throughout the island. Sling chairs and hammocks are installed on the beach by the hotel. The local healer practices in the village, he offers massage services (with the use of local oils and herbs).

When is it better to go

The rainy season in East Timor comes between December and April. Sunny and stable weather lasts from May to November, but the period from May to June, until the intense heat spread over the island, is considered the most comfortable time to travel.

How to get there

You can get to the island from Timor by ferries that run regularly, or by private boats. The journey takes about two hours.
