Lampuuk beach

Located on the northwest coast of Sumatra in Aceh province and is the best beach in the region. In 2004, the coast was badly damaged due to the devastating tsunami, but in a few years, all the necessary infrastructure was completely restored. A golf course, a stadium and a paintball club appeared around the beach, and the coastline pleases the eye with dazzling white sand brought in instead of the old yellow-brown one.

Beach description

Lampuuk Beach lurks in a large, crescent bay, surrounded by picturesque cliffs and dense tropical greenery. The coastline stretches for almost two kilometers and is covered with snow-white "Maldivian" sand, favorably shading the bright ocean turquoise . The waters of the bay are mostly quiet and calm, but there are also quite high waves that will surely please surf lovers.

Lampuuk is a universal beach where everyone can find something to their liking. Convenient entry into the water and the absence of waves attract families with young children to the beach, for whom inflatable slides, trampolines and other entertainments are organized. Adults can play sports, play volleyball, enjoy water rides and have fun in the coastal bars. There are rental offices for surfboards and sapboarding on the beach, you can rent kayaks, paddle boats, catamarans.

A big plus is the presence of natural shade on Lampuuk. Thanks to this, you can stay on the beach for the whole day, have a picnic in the shade of palm trees and even set up a campground.

Entrance is paid, although there is likely to be a loophole for "stowaways" on such a vast territory. The beach is equipped with toilets, showers and changing rooms, between the trees there are picnic areas with barbecue facilities, tables, benches and hammocks. Food and drinks are not necessary to bring with you, the area near the beach is full of shops and grocery stores.

You can get to the beach by car, scooter or bus, the road from Banda Aceh (the provincial capital) takes no more than twenty minutes. Transport can be left in paid parking lots, there are several of them and there is enough space for everyone.

When is it better to go?

The air temperature throughout the year differs little and keeps within + 28-30 degrees. In the evening and at night, it is slightly cooler, but the thermometer rarely falls below +23 degrees. The water temperature is also stable. In order to avoid the rainy season (months from December to March), it is better to visit the country from May to August.

Infrastructure

In 2004, a powerful earthquake occurred near Sumatra, which caused a devastating tsunami. Giant waves demolished many settlements from the face of the earth, including villages in the vicinity of Lampuuk. The whole world came to the aid of the countries of Indonesia affected by the disaster, and not only vital objects were restored in record time, but the entire tourism infrastructure was put in order. Now the beach and its environs are again filled with vacationers, including locals who like to spend weekend days in Lampuuk.

Closest to the beach is the guest house new Rudi's House, which hospitably opened its doors for the first visitors in January 2019. It offers cozy rooms with a private entrance and private terraces. All are equipped with air conditioning, private bathrooms, satellite TV and free internet. The property has a shaded garden with a playground and a relaxation area with a barbecue area. The nearest shops, markets and restaurants are a few tens of meters, to the sea - five minutes on foot.

In the southern part of the beach there is another atmospheric place, which is worth mentioning in our review. This is Joel's Bungalows - a small budget complex right on the beach consisting of a restaurant and several bungalows built right into the cliffs. Surfers, students, and connoisseurs of the so-called “eco-relaxation” prefer to stay here. The rooms are not provided with air conditioning, televisions and many other benefits of civilization, and the presence of huge tropical cockroaches and bats adds thrills.

Useful information

The 2004 tsunami shocked the whole world and made the local authorities of Indonesia pay more attention to the safety of tourists. All major beaches are equipped with an alarm system, and on the shore there are information signs with guidance on how to act in dangerous situations. Unfortunately, not everyone pays attention to them, so we recall some of the most important points:

  • Documents and valuables should always be at hand.
  • Upon arrival, you must familiarize yourself with the area, study the natural elevations and convenient approaches to them.
  • As a rule, the tsunami wave from the shore does not seem too high and dangerous, therefore people do not take the rescuers' warnings seriously, and, instead of running away from the sea as soon as possible, take pictures against its background.
  • Animals always feel the danger is approaching, and if they suddenly begin to migrate deep into the island or to climb highlands - this is a sure sign of an impending threat.
