Pongara beach

Located on the west coast of Gabon, just south of the country's capital, the city of Libreville. The beaches are located in the area of Cape Pongara are the territory of the nature reserve of the same name. Their western part is a multi-kilometer coastal strip, covered with white sand and emerald green jungle.

Beach description

Elephants, buffaloes, monkeys and other wild animals often go out to play in the turquoise waters of the ocean, so visiting the beach is possible only as part of the excursion tour. In the past, sand was actively mined here for export to the Arab Emirates, which did not have a good impact on the environmental situation. Now the order is kept by special environmental organizations, and violators will face significant fines.

The northern part of the beaches of the reserve is located at the mouth of the Como River, which is home to a large number of rare animals, including giant leatherback turtles. The only way to get to their nesting places (from November to February) is by water, and during the trip the boat will have to be carried over the banks on your own shoulders.

A special feature of Pongara beaches is the abundance of huge logs thrown ashore. This is a result of the destructive surf activity, which gradually erodes the beach and gets closer to the jungle.

When is the best time to go?

A typical tropical monsoon climate with a long rainy season is typical of these places. Therefore, the best months to visit the surroundings of Libreville are from June to August, when the amount of precipitation is minimal, the air warms up to 30, and the water in the ocean – up to 25 degrees.
