Cocoloco beach

Kokoloko Beach is a small cozy beach resort on the Atlantic coast, surrounded by thickets of coconut trees. It is located an hour and a half east of Accra, near the village of Ada Foah, (Volta region) at the mouth of the Volta River. Cocoloco Beach is popular among lovers of a quiet beach holiday, it provides an opportunity to get acquainted with the lifestyle of the people of Ghana, to observe the West African nature - birds and turtles.

Beach description

Cocoloco Beach is a unfrequented  beach, located in a remote and, therefore, difficult of access place. Its coastline is covered with soft golden sand. Unlike neighboring beaches, it is much cleaner. The entry into the ocean in the Cocoloco region is sloping, with an even sandy bottom, which makes it convenient for swimming. The sea breeze, blowing here, often forms strong waves, comfortable for practicing water sports - windsurfing, surfing, kitesurfing, sailing.

This beach is a breeding ground for sea turtles and is located next to the habitat of estuarine birds, so its visit is combined with the possibility of:

  • bathe;
  • sunbathe;
  • admire views;
  • cruise;
  • have a good time at the beach bar;
  • play beach volleyball or football;
  • from November to December, see, how turtles migrate to lay eggs;
  • explore living here;
  • see, how local fishermen catch fish.

Cocoloco is primarily visited by company or alone, lovers of wildlife and African exotics. The lack of developed infrastructure makes it inaccessible for rest of families with children.

It is possible to get to the beach by rented car or public transport, leaving the town of Tema.

When is the best time to go?

In Ghana, the year-round temperature is between + 24- + 32 degrees. You should remember, that in January-February, dry winds from the desert blow from the north, although their influence is almost imperceptible on the seashore. There are rainy periods in Ghana in spring and autumn, so the best time to visit is summer or winter.
