Beach description
The many-kilometer coast, covered with black volcanic sand and high ocean waves are especially attractive for surfers and wildlife lovers. It is possible to swim only at low tide, but swimming far away is dangerous even for experienced swimmers, since strong currents form near the coast. Squalling winds often blow over the long territory of Monterrico.
There is no infrastructure on the beach, as it is one of the breeding grounds of sea turtles, which oviposit eggs in the sand for millions of years. After a couple of months, thousands of young turtles dot the coast, heading for the ocean, despite dangerous obstacles in the form of people, animals, birds.
One of the most common ways for local residents to earn money is to catch turtles for sale to compassionate tourists, who buy them and put them into the water.
Along Monterrico there are several hotels of different levels. Beach holidays in combination with turtles open up magnificent prospects for the development of the resort. In the meantime, it’s better to go to Guatemala with friends and without children.
