Tikhaya Gulf beach
On the eastern coast of Sakhalin lies an enchanting destination nestled within Terpeniya Bay, aptly named Tikhaya Bay. This serene haven lives up to its moniker, offering a tranquil retreat where the waters are perpetually calm. The only commotion you'll encounter is the raucous calls of seagulls that inhabit the rugged Zametnyi Island. Their piercing cries serve as a warning to any who dare approach their sanctuary.

Beach description
The territory of the Bay is largely occupied by rocky heaps resting on dense sandstone. Only the coastal zone boasts dark volcanic sand, shielded from the cold winds by overhanging rocks on all sides. The waves have sculpted bizarre niches and grottoes at their base, which tourists eagerly explore.
On sunny summer days, the water near the shore can warm up to a balmy 20 degrees Celsius. Here, vacationers enjoy swimming and sunbathing, although Tikhaya cannot accommodate a large influx of tourists with their vehicles. The area's distinctive vegetation, roughly a dozen waterfalls in the northern part of the Bay, and excellent fishing opportunities are the main attractions for travelers.
The journey from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk to Tikhaya spans about 140 km. The road is in very good condition; it is crucial not to miss the correct turnoff. Alternatively, one can reach Tikhaya by boat or powerboat, which also allows for fishing excursions. En route to the Vzmorye village, a visit to the Japanese Temple Gate is a fascinating detour. Moreover, the market offers not only crabs but also delectable Korean steamed dumplings.
When is the best time to go?
The best time to visit Sakhalin for a beach vacation is during the brief summer season, which typically spans from late June to early September. This period offers the most favorable weather conditions for enjoying the island's coastal areas.
- Late June to July: This is the start of the summer with milder temperatures and longer daylight hours, making it an ideal time for beach activities and exploring the island's natural beauty.
- August: Often considered the peak of the summer, August provides the warmest temperatures, which can reach up to 20°C (68°F). The sea becomes warmer and more suitable for swimming, and the island's flora is in full bloom.
- Early September: As summer winds down, the beginning of September still offers pleasant weather, though the temperatures start to cool. It's a great time for those looking to avoid the peak season crowds while still enjoying outdoor beach activities.
Regardless of the specific month, it's important to note that Sakhalin's weather can be unpredictable, and visitors should be prepared for sudden changes. However, for sunbathing, swimming, and experiencing the unique coastal environment of Sakhalin, the summer months are definitely the best time to visit.
