Snelling beach

Snelling is a small beach surrounded by low boulders on the north coast of Kangaroo Island. You can get to Snelling in a rented car from Kingscote Airport or from the ferry terminal. Near the beach there is a small parking lot and a campsite with toilets, water and launching boats.

Beach description

Snelling beach is 650 meter long and covered with fine light sand. There are many stone blocks of different shapes and sizes on the shore and in the water. Descent into the water is gentle, the bottom is sandy and stony. The sea, bounded by stone ledges, is quite calm, but high waves rise in windy weather. There are no rescue services in Snelling, so you need to be especially careful when swimming. When the wave height is above 1 meter, a dangerous fencing current is formed. The beach is deserted and there are infrastructure facilities other than camping sites. It's a good place for lovers of privacy. Local amusements:

  • fishing,
  • scuba diving,
  • surfing,
  • diving,
  • snorkeling.

The beach is unsuitable for vacation with children. To rest in Snelling, you should stock up on food and drinks, bring diving and surfing equipment. You can rent boats on the beach.

When is it better to go

The busiest swimming season in Australia lasts from December to February. In this summer, for the southern latitudes, the mainland heats up to 25-30 °C, in places up to 40 °C. In winter (June to August) the air is cooled down to 11 °C. May and September are considered the best beach months with a cloudless sky and not too active sun.
