South Friars beach

The idyllic South Friars Beach, nestled just a few kilometers from the heart of Basseterre, graces the Caribbean coast of the island along the shores of Frigate Bay. This stunning sandy retreat is the perfect destination for those planning a beach vacation in Saint Kitts, offering a serene escape with its breathtaking views and tranquil waters.

Beach description

South Friars Beach is graced with soft and light yellow, almost white sand, offering a comfortable experience for barefoot visitors. However, the entry to the sea is somewhat steep. At the bottom, one can find numerous sharp shells and stones, and occasionally, sea urchins lurk, making it advisable to wear protective footwear when entering the water. The water itself is clean, transparent, and very warm, providing a serene environment as there are no waves. Not far from the shore, an underwater world thrives with abundant algae, gliding rays, and schools of tropical fish, while purple starfish meander between the stones on the ocean floor.

The infrastructure at Portales Beach is well-developed, featuring amenities such as showers, changing cabins, toilets, and rentals of comfortable sun loungers and deck chairs made of rattan, along with umbrellas. A restaurant boasting excellent cuisine is also available. One of the main local attractions is a bay, enclosed by boulders, which is a favorite spot for snorkeling enthusiasts. Here, pelicans can be observed diving for their prey. In a more secluded area, the beach transitions into a zone with striking black volcanic sand.

South Friars is renowned as the most bustling beach on the island, enjoying immense popularity among tourists, while the locals tend to frequent other areas.

While the beach offers many attractions, it may not be the ideal destination for holidays with young children. When planning a visit to South Friars, it is important to consider the potentially exhausting journey for your child and the rocky sea bottom.

Transportation to South Friars is accessible via taxi from the port. Sharing the ride with fellow travelers can significantly reduce the cost of the trip. It is worth noting that public transport in the direction of St. Kitts is not well-developed.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Saint Kitts for a beach vacation is during the dry season, which spans from December to April. This period offers the most favorable weather conditions for enjoying the island's stunning beaches and outdoor activities.

  • December to February: These months are ideal for those looking to escape colder climates. The weather is warm but not excessively hot, and the risk of rain is minimal, making it perfect for sunbathing and water sports.
  • March to April: This is the peak of the dry season, with slightly warmer temperatures and longer daylight hours. It's an excellent time for those who want to maximize their time on the beach and enjoy the vibrant local festivals.
  • Late April: As the month progresses, there's a gradual increase in humidity and the chance of showers, but it's also a period when you can find better deals on accommodations and fewer crowds.

Regardless of the specific month, the dry season in Saint Kitts offers a delightful beach vacation experience with its consistent sunshine and gentle trade winds. Just remember to book your accommodations in advance, as this is a popular time for tourists.
