Mers les Bains beach

Mers-les-Bains (Plage de Mers-les-Bains) is the picturesque beach of the southernmost resort in the Hauts-de-France region. Its particular attractiveness stems not only from its excellent location but also from its breathtaking scenery. Part of the beach is flanked by impressive snow-white cliffs, atop which the settlement partially sits, while another section adjoins the promenade, which captivates with its blend of exquisite ancient and striking modern architecture.

Beach description

The total length of Mers les Bains beach is approximately one kilometer. The vast coastline is adorned with a mix of large light and gray shingle, revealing small sandy areas during low tides. From any vantage point along the coast, visitors are treated to spectacular scenery, with the southern outskirts offering the most picturesque views. The sea here is generally calm, except during periods of tidal change.

Dotting the coastline are numerous changing cabins equipped with showers. Strolling along the promenade, one can discover several cozy cafes and restaurants. A walk here also allows for the admiration of the many beautiful villas, each boasting original colored facades and semi-antique decorations. These villas are a main attraction of the resort, second only to the natural scenery.

When is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit the French Northern coast for a beach vacation is during the summer months, from June to August. This period offers the most favorable weather conditions for enjoying the beaches.

  • June: The beginning of summer is a great time to visit. The weather is warming up, and the tourist rush is not at its peak, allowing for a more relaxed experience.
  • July: July is the height of the tourist season. The weather is typically warm and sunny, making it ideal for beach activities. However, expect larger crowds and higher prices.
  • August: Similar to July, August offers excellent beach weather. It's also a popular vacation month for Europeans, so beaches may be crowded. By the end of August, the crowds start to thin out as the peak season winds down.

For those seeking a quieter experience, the shoulder seasons of late May, early June, and September can also be pleasant, though the water may be too cool for swimming. Regardless of when you visit, the French Northern coast offers stunning scenery and a unique coastal charm.
