Lombo Gordo beach
Lombo Gordo is a remote wild beach located in the east of the island of San Miguel. A small stretch of sand is located at the foot of a high mountain range. There are no settlements near the beach (the nearest town of Nordeste is 2 kilometers away) or hotels, it can only be reached by car. From the parking lot you have to go down a rather steep staircase, consisting of passages and bridges.

The beach is located between two breakwaters, so you can swim comfortably even with strong winds. An important feature - after lunch, the water area hides in the shade, you can sunbathe on Lombo Gordo only until noon.
The beach and ocean floor next to it are covered with volcanic black sand and stones. Growth in depth in this place of the coast occurs rather quickly. If the ocean is calm, then you can relax on the coast with great comfort and almost alone. There are very few visitors to Lombo Gordo. In a storm it is better to limit yourself to a walk along the shore, as there are no lifeguards here. It is also worthwhile to take care of protection from burns of jellyfish in advance, there are a lot of them in calm summer. There is a toilet and shower on the beach, but they are not in the best condition. There is no equipment (deckchairs, umbrellas) for rest . It is also worth taking care of water and food yourself.
When is it better to go
The beach season in Portugal lasts from the beginning of June until September, when the air temperature reaches +30°C and the water temperature - +19°C. It should be remembered that the Atlantic Ocean does not warm up well and cools quickly, lovers of a more comfortable temperature can swim in natural stone pools, which are quite numerous on the coast.
