Arkhangelsk City Beach

City also known as Central Beach, is located in the heart of Arkhangelsk and is very popular among locals and visitors. Despite the fact that the water temperature in the Northern Dvina, even at the peak of the summer season, does not exceed 16-18 degrees, there are always a lot of visitors on the beach who enjoy sunbathing, play sports, soccer and volleyball, or simply walk along the picturesque promenade.

Beach description

The beach is quite long and wide coastline covered by fine sand. The river in this place is shallow, stagnant, the bottom is silty and marshy. Sometimes there are large logs and driftwood brought during the spring ice drift, and if the local authorities try to maintain the beach in order, then the quality of the water leaves much to be desired. Swimming on the beach is officially forbidden, about which appropriate plates witness. It is worth to note that not one beach in the city corresponds to sanitary and epidemiological standards, so even on hot days it is better to refrain from water procedures.

In summer months rescuers work on the beach, there are changing cabins and rental of sunbeds. Among entertainment there are volleyball net, inflatable slides and trampolines for children, in the neighboring yacht club you can rent a boat, kayak or sappboard.

Next to the beach there is city embarkment, general length of which is about six kilometers. There are many different historical sites and monuments, including a bronze sculpture of the Seal the Savior, one of the marks of the city.

It’s nice to walk along the embarkment and ride a bicycle or roller skates, there are cozy cafes and restaurants, open verandas of which offer beautiful views of the Northern Dvina and the ships on the road. In winter, skiing competitions are held right on the shore, and the river turns into a giant ice rink.

The beach is located in the very center of the city, it can be easily reached by regular bus or taxi. You can also walk to the beach along the pedestrian street of Chumbarov-Luchinsky, on the way visiting local attractions and admiring pretty squares.

When is the best time to go?

The best time to visit the Russian Arctic is July, August and September. At this time, warm sunny weather sets in, which means more opportunities for a comfortable stay in tents, hiking and other delights of ecotourism. Although, swimming in the northern seas is unlikely to succeed (even in hot summer days, the water temperature does not exceed 11 degrees), but sunbathing on picturesque beaches, watching the tides and enjoying the sound of tidal bore will definitely work out.

Useful information

  1. Arkhangelsk was founded in the time of Ivan the Terrible, later Peter the Great turned the city into the cradle of Russian shipbuilding. Many historical monuments and unique architectural structures have survived to nowadays, most of which are mostly in the area of the embankment.
  2. It’s most logical to start familiarizing with the city from the seaport, which is considered to be the gateway to the northern seas, and until the founding of St. Petersburg, it served as the only “window to Europe” for Russian ships.
  3. At the beginning of the embankment, in the area of Voskresenskaya Street, stands a monument to Peter the Great, erected by grateful descendants in 1914. The monument is surrounded by a beautiful square, and from the observation deck a significant view of the Northern Dvina opens.
  4. Perhaps the most iconic place for Arkhangelsk is Cape Pur Novolok, from which the history of the city begins. Here in 1584 a fortress was laid around which Arkhangelsk grew up. In honor of this event, the embankment is decorated with a commemorative stela - a visiting card of the city, depicted on all advertising brochures.
  5. Right behind the stela there is the magnificent Gostiny Dvor - the oldest building in the city, which now houses the local history museum and concert hall. And at the end of the embankment on a hill a snow-white temple of the Assumption of the Virgin rises - another magnificent observation deck with panoramic views of the Northern Dvina.
