Beach description

Scheveningen Beach in The Netherlands is a picturesque destination with a sprawling sandy coastline stretching approximately 3 km. Tucked away in the northern part of the resort, beyond the pier, lies a secluded area designated for nudists. The beach slopes gently into the sea, with a smooth seabed and a gradual increase in depth. The official swimming season is brief, encompassing only July and August. The Netherlands is known for its brisk northern winds, frequent rainfall, and limited sunny days. Moreover, the North Sea's waters rarely warm beyond +20 degrees Celsius, making swimming an infrequent activity for visitors.

Despite the cooler climate, tourists find plenty of enjoyment basking in the sun, exploring museums, dining in exquisite restaurants, and discovering other captivating establishments. The beach is predominantly frequented by locals who consider +10 degrees Celsius not merely cool, but rather pleasantly warm. Scheveningen takes pride in its cleanliness and well-maintained facilities. The beach is meticulously groomed daily by utility services employing advanced technology.

Even with the temperate climate, it is essential to apply protective sunscreen during clear weather, as the sun's rays can be surprisingly intense without the sensation of heat. To accommodate comfort during stormy conditions, special small tent-screens are erected on the beach. It is advisable to check the weather forecast before departing from your hotel, dress in warm layers, and carry an umbrella if needed.

  • When to Visit: For the optimal beach vacation experience in Scheveningen, plan your visit during the warmer months of July and August when the official swimming season is in full swing.

When is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit The Netherlands for a beach vacation is typically during the summer months, from June to August. During this period, the country enjoys the warmest weather, with average temperatures ranging from 17°C to 20°C, which can occasionally rise above 25°C.

  • June - The early summer month offers pleasant temperatures and longer days, perfect for enjoying the seaside and getting a head start on the summer crowds.
  • July - As the peak of summer, July brings the warmest weather, ideal for sunbathing, swimming, and engaging in various beach activities. However, it's also the busiest month, so expect more tourists.
  • August - The weather remains warm, and the North Sea is at its most inviting temperature. August is also a great time for water sports and beach festivals.

For those seeking a quieter beach experience, the late spring (May) and early fall (September) can also be good options, with fewer tourists and mild weather, though the sea might be too chilly for swimming. Regardless of when you visit, the Dutch coastline offers a unique beach vacation with charming seaside towns, expansive dunes, and wide sandy beaches.
