Hietaniemi beach

Hietaniemi Beach is one of the most popular Finnish beaches among holidaymakers. Particularly attractive is its favorable location right in the center of Helsinki, in the Töölö region, along with the long sandy shore and its easy accessibility. It is curious that the beach was created artificially at the beginning of the 20th century, in the place where the sand unloaded from the barges was originally stored. Now it is a popular holiday destination, which the Finns themselves call Hietsu, which means "fine sand."

Beach description

Hietaniemi is the longest sandy beach in Helsinki, which is suitable for both families and young people. But still, this coast is more popular among young people and those who like activities. Due to the special popularity and many cafes and bars on the shore, this beach is often called the “Helsinki Copacabana."

  • The beach is ideal for relaxing on the shore, but even in summer, there is pretty cool water for swimming (usually it is not warmer than + 20 ° C).
  • The slope is smooth, and the bottom, like the coast itself, is covered with soft sand, there are no high waves here. So for those who are not afraid of cool water, this is a nice place to swim.
  • The coast is quite clean, and there are all the possibilities for a pleasant pastime, from sports grounds to swings in the shade.
  • It is easy to get to the beach even by city bus, and in the summer season it is very crowded here. But due to the considerable length of the coast you can always find a free space.

Since 1995, a beach volleyball tournament has been held annually on the coast, which attracts many connoisseurs of active leisure and fans of this sport. There is an island overgrown with dense vegetation not far from the coast, which is the abode of seabirds. If you wish, you can even get there by swimming.

When is the best time to go?

It is best to go to the few beach resorts in Finland in July-August, when the weather is the warmest. In the south-east of the country, the temperature rises even to 30 degrees.
