Morgat beach

Located in the western part of Brittany on the Crozon Peninsula lies one of the most picturesque beaches in the Finistère department: Morgat Beach. What was once an unremarkable fishing village two centuries ago has transformed into the charming resort village of Morgat. At the end of the 19th century, a balneological resort was established here, quickly becoming a favored retreat for the French elite. Today, the town continues to draw tourists with its well-developed infrastructure, convenient harbor for yachts, and stunning beaches.

Beach description

The beach is quite long (about a kilometre), sandy, and pebbly, protected by a bay from the strong Atlantic winds. It is conditionally divided into several zones. The busiest and most organized one is in the area of the yacht marina. The shore here is covered with soft sand; the sea is shallow and calm, with the entry into the water being smooth and safe.

The beach is equipped with everything you need; it's an ideal place for family holidays with small children. There are slides and trampolines for children, water attractions, and boat and catamaran rental centers. A yacht club and a diving center are also in the vicinity of the port.

The further from the harbor, the more deserted the beach becomes. Sand gives way to medium-sized pebbles, and trees and shrubs come close to the shore. The edge of the bay is quite "wild" and unusually picturesque. There is a small cave, which opens at low tide, and a stream with clean, fresh water gushing out of the rock. These places are preferred by connoisseurs of secluded stays and beautiful landscapes, including many nudists and LGBT representatives. Moreover, the coastal cliffs and the colorful underwater world around them attract fans of diving and snorkeling.

When is the best time to go?

The best time to visit the French Northern coast for a beach vacation is during the summer months, from June to August. This period offers the most favorable weather conditions for enjoying the beaches.

  • June: The beginning of summer is a great time to visit. The weather is warming up, and the tourist rush is not at its peak, allowing for a more relaxed experience.
  • July: July is the height of the tourist season. The weather is typically warm and sunny, making it ideal for beach activities. However, expect larger crowds and higher prices.
  • August: Similar to July, August offers excellent beach weather. It's also a popular vacation month for Europeans, so beaches may be crowded. By the end of August, the crowds start to thin out as the peak season winds down.

For those seeking a quieter experience, the shoulder seasons of late May, early June, and September can also be pleasant, though the water may be too cool for swimming. Regardless of when you visit, the French Northern coast offers stunning scenery and a unique coastal charm.

Infrastructure

The beach is quite remote, nestled off the highway. To reach it, take the road from downtown Crozon towards the turn-off for Morgat. After passing the village, you must leave your car behind: a rather steep staircase descends to the sea.

A picturesque boulevard stretches along the entire shore, offering a delightful spot to sit on a bench under the shade of expansive trees or to enjoy a cup of coffee while taking in the local scenery. Along the boulevard, numerous artists and musicians can be found, and in the evenings, theatrical performances are held. The finest restaurants and hotels in the village, as well as bars, discos, and nightclubs, are situated here. Notably, the beachfront is not dominated by large multi-story hotels; instead, small villas and guest houses catering to individual or family stays are the preferred choice. One such option is the Bois de Kador, conveniently located in the forested area between the beach and the road leading to Cap de la Chèvre. It entices tourists with its well-maintained grounds and homely comfort. The living room, dining room, and two bedrooms are fully equipped, and it's a pleasure to gather on the spacious open veranda with a large dining table for company. Amenities include a children's room and playground, a barbecue area, and in the lounge - a fireplace, plush sofas, and a large flat-screen TV with satellite channels, complemented by Wi-Fi.
