Betio beach

Located on the tiny island of Betio in the southwestern part of Tarawa Atoll next to the town of the same name. In November 1943 this lost in Pacific Ocean island became the epicenter of the bloody battle between American and Japanese forces, which went down in world war II history as the "Battle of Tarawa".

Beach description

In those terrible days the beach was called Red Beache because of the rivers of human blood coloured the shore. Mangled guns, tanks and rusty anti-aircraft guns are still scattered all over the island and are mute witnesses of those tragic events. This attract those who is interested in war history. After all, there are not so many places in the world where people can easily get inside the coastal defenses, take a picture against the background of a broken tank or anti-aircraft gun, or see a sunken military battleship with their own eyes.

Only small areas near hotels are suitable for classical beach recreation. It's clean there, necessary infrastructure, and tourists shouldn't worry about a rusty piece of iron which can cut the skin. The rest of the territory remains the military museum under the open sky, that's why it should be visited with great care.

When is it better to go?

The beach season in Kiritimati (Republic of Kiribati) lasts all the time, however, climatic and weather conditions have divided the year into two seasons. The rainiest period falls in January-April, and the driest – in May and June, the hottest months (t ° + 32 °C) are September-November, the coldest (t ° + 26 °C) is January-March.   Hurricanes are rarely on the island, and the weather is pretty good even in the rainy season, so trips to the beaches of Kiribati are possible at any time of the year.
