Sun Bay beach
Located in the southern part of the island of Vieques, which is located 11 kilometers from the east coast of Puerto Rico and is one of its coastal municipalities. The island abounds with magnificent sandy beaches, almost untouched by civilization, and is also famous for the bay of Puerto Mosquito with a unique bioluminescent backlight. In 2017, the bay was significantly affected by the devastating hurricane "Mary" that swept over the Caribbean, but in just a year, the unique underwater lighting system was restored, and Mosquito Bay again appeared before tourists in all its splendor.

Beach description
Sun Bay Beach is Vieques' largest and most comfortable beach. It is a kilometer away from the resort village of Esperanza, which is considered a convenient starting point for exploring the island.
The beach is a three-kilometer coastal strip curved in the shape of a crescent and covered with delicate golden sand. Sun Bay is surrounded by luxurious palm groves and other exotic trees and as if stepped off the cover of a handout. The idyllic picture is complemented by a transparent, glass like, sea of amazing turquoise hue. The bay is reliably protected from strong storms and currents, waves are most often in the winter, and the rest of the time the water area resembles a giant pool. The bottom is sandy and safe, among the marine inhabitants you can find only small fish, crabs and rare starfish hiding in algae.
The beach is equipped with showers, toilets and changing rooms, there are picnic tables and hammocks in the shade of palm trees. You can rent umbrellas and deck chairs in coastal cafes, but usually there is not enough for everyone. Sun Bay Beach is quite crowded in the high season and on weekends, but the gigantic size of the beach allows you to find a comfortable place and conveniently sit on your own towel.
Guards are organized along the coast and a rescue service is operating. Safe swimming areas are marked with buoys and special signs, alarm flags on towers are warning about abrupt weather changes and other surprises.
Among the entertainments - boat trips in canoes and kayaks, sapboarding, water skiing and jet skiing. The beach of Esperanza, which is located just west of Sun Bay Beach, is more suitable for snorkeling and diving.
On the beach there are many cafes, eateries, restaurants where you can satisfy your hunger and refresh yourself with soft drinks and ice cream. Picnic lovers can bring their own meals and comfortably sit in the shade of trees.
When is the best time to go?
Puerto Rico is warm year-round, but from May to November, hurricanes often fly along the coast. One of them only a short time ago literally swept off the pier, which appeared before the camera the famous Despacito, and made it a history. Also during this period is characterized by the increased humidity and a lot of rainfall. The most favorable period is the time from December to April. Puerto Rico is recommended for a tourist holiday in these months.

Entrance to the beach is free, you only have to pay for parking. Those who wish to stay on the beach with an overnight stay can set up a tent in a comfortable camping site. To do this, you must register at the office and pay 10 dollars. It provides tourists with showers, toilets, equipped kitchens and barbecue areas with all necessary accessories. Wild horses wander into the campsite at night, so don’t leave valuables and sports equipment unattended.
Connoisseurs of more comfortable conditions can stay in the village of Esperanza, where you can always find the right accommodation for every taste and budget. One of the most popular options is a hotel Flamboyan Guest House, located on the first line right on the beach. The spacious apartments are decorated in a contemporary style and are equipped with air conditioning and fans. There is a small seating area and a bathroom with a hairdryer and essential hygiene items. Some rooms have a furnished terrace with views on the bay.
