Sun Bay beach
Located in the southern part of Vieques Island, which lies 11 kilometers off the east coast of Puerto Rico, Sun Bay Beach is a gem among the island's coastal municipalities. This idyllic destination boasts magnificent sandy beaches that remain almost untouched by civilization. It is also renowned for the enchanting Mosquito Bay, famous for its unique bioluminescent glow. In 2017, the bay was significantly affected by the devastating Hurricane Maria that swept through the Caribbean. However, within just a year, the bay's mesmerizing underwater light show was restored. Today, Mosquito Bay re-emerges in all its glory, ready to dazzle tourists once again with its natural splendor.

Beach description
Sun Bay Beach, located on Vieques Island, stands as the largest and most inviting beach in the area. Just a kilometer from the quaint resort village of Esperanza, it serves as an ideal launchpad for island exploration.
The beach unfurls across a three-kilometer stretch, curving into a crescent shape and blanketed with fine golden sand. Encircled by lush palm groves and other tropical flora, Sun Bay seems to leap from the pages of a travel brochure. The scene is perfected by the crystal-clear, turquoise waters that gently lap the shore. Shielded from the harsher elements, the bay remains tranquil, with waves typically stirring only in winter months. For the remainder of the year, the waters are as placid as a vast pool. The seabed is sandy and benign, home to harmless marine life such as small fish, crabs, and the occasional starfish nestled among the seaweed.
Amenities at Sun Bay Beach include showers, restrooms, and changing facilities. Visitors can enjoy picnic tables and hammocks under the cool shade of palm trees. While coastal cafes offer umbrella and deck chair rentals, availability may be limited. Despite the beach's popularity during peak season and weekends, its expansive size ensures that everyone can find a spot to relax on their own towel.
Coastal safety is a priority, with lifeguards stationed along the shore and a vigilant rescue service in operation. Designated swimming zones are clearly marked with buoys and signs, while alarm flags atop towers signal sudden weather shifts and potential hazards.
Recreational activities abound, from canoe and kayak excursions to stand-up paddleboarding, water skiing, and jet skiing. For those interested in snorkeling and diving, the neighboring Esperanza Beach, situated just west of Sun Bay Beach, offers ideal conditions.
The beachfront is dotted with a variety of cafes, eateries, and restaurants, perfect for quelling hunger or enjoying a refreshing soft drink and ice cream. Picnic enthusiasts are welcome to bring their own fare and settle comfortably in the tree-shaded areas.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Puerto Rico for a beach vacation is typically from mid-April to June, right after the busy winter season and just before the rainy summer. During this period, visitors can enjoy the perfect combination of good weather, less crowded beaches, and reasonable hotel rates.
- Mid-April to June: The weather is warm and sunny, with temperatures averaging in the mid-80s Fahrenheit. The risk of rain is lower, and the ocean water is invitingly warm, making it ideal for swimming and water sports.
- December to April: This is the high season when the weather is also favorable, but beaches and resorts can be crowded, and prices are at their peak due to the influx of tourists escaping colder climates.
- July to November: While this is the official hurricane season, and there's a higher chance of rain, you can still enjoy hot and sunny days. However, it's important to monitor weather forecasts and be flexible with travel plans during this time.
Ultimately, the best time for a beach vacation in Puerto Rico depends on your preferences for weather, budget, and crowd levels. Mid-April to June offers a balanced experience for most beachgoers.
