Corcovado beach

The beaches of Corcovado are stretched on the territory of the huge Corcovado National Park, which occupies most of the Osa Peninsula on the Pacific coastline of Costa Rica. Close to the long and wide beaches, covered with brown sand, tropical mangroves approach.

Beach description

On the beaches of Corcovado there is no beach infrastructure. Access to the National Park is paid. Heavy-going paths lead to the coast through the jungle, it’s not safe to go to the conservation area without a guide. Corcovado is famous for its rich wildlife, among which there are many predators, like cougars, jaguars, crocodiles, caimans, poisonous snakes. Also, there is a danger for swimmers to come across with a bull shark. Sea turtles get on the land to rest and lay eggs. In the forest, if you're lucky, it is possible to meet a tapir, ocelot, jaguarondi, see flocks of parrots, four species of monkeys.

The main sight of Corcovado is the Punta Sal Cipuedes Cave, near the mouth of the Rio Claro River. Nobody has been able to discover the treasures so far, and interest in this place is not weakening. Another of the popular routes is a boat trip to the island of Isla del Cano, which, due to the magnificence of the underwater world, was chosen by divers.

There are hotels near Corcovado in towns of Drake Bay and Puerto Jimenez, that should be booked in advance. There are many places available at campsites.

When is it better to go

The peak  season in Costa Rica begins in December and lasts until April. This period is characterized by clear, sunny weather without precipitation and a massive influx of tourists. Air temperature – above +30°C, water – not below +25°C. From June to October, the rainy season prevails, when the country is flooded with heavy tropical downpours with churly blasts. It is possible to go on a trip in November and May, when the rains are not torrential and fall rarely. At this time, the cost of tours is reduced.
