Santa Teresa beach

The expansive sandy beach of Santa Teresa stretches along the shoreline of the quaint village of Mal Pais, seamlessly blending into the vibrant city of Santa Teresa in the southwestern region of the Nicoya Peninsula. In close proximity lies the magnificent Santa Teresa National Park, renowned for its diverse terrestrial and marine flora and fauna, which is among the richest on the Pacific coast.

Beach description

Santa Teresa Beach is considered one of the most beautiful places in Costa Rica. The fine, light beige sand with a golden tint evenly covers kilometer-long sections of the coast, bordering the splendid rainforest.

The entrance to the water is smooth, with a sandy and rocky bottom. However, due to the powerful surf, it is challenging to wade slowly into the depths. Santa Teresa is not the best place for swimming but is perfect for surfing. The high waves and sea breezes provide excellent conditions for windsurfing.

The beach is always half-empty, attracting lone travelers, windsurfers, and nudists who enjoy spending time here. There are no sunbeds or umbrellas. Along the coastline, you'll find affordable hostels, campgrounds, and parking lots. If you're visiting Santa Teresa with children, a hotel with a pool would be the most suitable accommodation.

While there are no cafes or restaurants directly on the beach, you can enjoy a meal at the cafes in Mal País.

The town of Santa Teresa offers everything you need for a relaxing holiday, including hotels, shops, supermarkets, restaurants, cafes, and banks. You can rent a boat or speedboat for a coastal excursion, visit the waterfalls of Montezuma, explore protected areas, or go fishing.

You can reach Santa Teresa via a connecting flight through New York, Mexico, or Lima. The closest international airport to Santa Teresa is located in Tambor.

Best Time to Visit

The Pacific Coast of Costa Rica is a stunning destination for beach enthusiasts, offering a blend of beautiful shorelines and tropical wildlife. To make the most of your beach vacation, timing is key.

  • Dry Season (December to April): This is the most popular time to visit, as the weather is sunny and rainfall is minimal, making it perfect for beach activities and wildlife watching. However, it's also the busiest period, so expect more tourists and higher prices.
  • Green Season (May to November): For those who don't mind occasional rain showers, the green season offers lush landscapes and fewer crowds. Mornings are typically sunny, with rain in the afternoons or evenings, allowing for enjoyable beach time. Moreover, this period offers better deals on accommodations.

For the ideal balance of good weather and fewer tourists, consider the shoulder months of May and November. These months mark the transition between the dry and green seasons, providing a pleasant mix of sunshine and manageable tourist numbers. Ultimately, the best time to visit depends on your preferences for weather, crowds, and travel deals.
