Kushibaru beach

Kushibaru Beach is a calm and little-known place located in the most western part of Aka Island. Locals often call this beach heavenly. You can get to Aka Island via a ferry from Naha or by a speed boat from the shores of Zamami Island.

Beach description

The untouched crystal clear waters in this part of East China Sea are perfect for underwater swimming. Kushibaru is popular among tourists, who, despite its inconvenient location, still choose this beach for snorkeling and diving. Unlike the neighboring Nishibama Beach, the descent on Kushibaru consists of sand mixed with shells, corals and stones, so you'll need to wear slippers. The natural rocky bay serves as a breakwater, so the waves here are calm and low. However, underwater currents, non-existent during low tides, can be encountered during tides.

Takibaru and Kushibaru observatories, that serve as a kind of reference point when searching for the beach, are located nearby.

When is it better to go?

If in the north of Japan, in Hokkaido, the weather in January-February is quite wintery, in the southern islands the temperature rarely drops below 20 degrees even in the cold season. In summer, the rainy season comes in Japan, when the humidity becomes almost one hundred percent, and the thermometer is at 30 to 40 degrees.   Therefore, the best time to travel to Japan – is late spring or early autumn.
