Machico beach

Sandy shore of Machico, located on the eastern coast of Madeira, is one of the pearls of Portugal. It attracts tourists with fine golden sand, lack of strong streams, gorgeous mountain scenery and developed infrastructure.

Beach description

The main treasure of Machico is its unique artificial cover. Imported from North Africa yellow sand laid on the shore of a dense even layer. No huge boulders, no sharp shells are not found here. Walking on such a clean and soft carpet is a pleasure.

The second advantage, especially for mothers with young children, is a convenient smooth entry into the water. High waves don't disturb the visitors: several concrete structures are responsible for the calmness of the ocean depths. However, the presence of breakwaters makes the water a little turbid. But this small inconvenies doesn't harm the popularity of Machico.

Many tourists perceive the cozy Bay of Machico as a comfortable pool with warm sea water, surrounded by picturesque moles. Cozy waters 70m deep are 125m long. Despite the absence of area for children there are a lot of people with babies.

When is it better to go

The beach season in Portugal lasts from the beginning of June until September, when the air temperature reaches +30°C and the water temperature - +19°C. It should be remembered that the Atlantic Ocean does not warm up well and cools quickly, lovers of a more comfortable temperature can swim in natural stone pools, which are quite numerous on the coast.

Where to eat

In addition to the food stalls and cooling drinks on the beach of Machico is full of cafes of different profiles: confectionery, fish, ice cream. Many places like this work from morning till night.

Restaurant menus amaze with variety of dishes (Mediterranean, Portuguese, European), the size of the portions, the range of wines and the richness of the cocktail list. Useful information

  1. Today's golden sand of Machico once was the place where for the first time landed Portuguese sailors who discovered Madeira. This 15 century's significant event was imprinted on a commemorative plaque nailed directly to the coastal rock. Interestingly, the town of Machico - now a fishing port - was the island's first capital.
  2. Families with children and anyone who avoids the hustle and bustle should plan a holiday on this beach.
