Calafell beach

The Calafell Beach, its name translating to "golden shore", is located on the Costa Dorada coast. This is one of the most popular coastlines in Catalonia. The place has a unique landscape, with grainy golden sand covering the beach and the sea bottom, and the Mediterranean Sea is crystal clear. The territory of the beach belongs to the historical Catalan town of the same name that was a fisherman village before. This is a perfect place for those who like national Spanish culture and sights. Many ancient Roman cities are located around the town.

Beach description

Calafell is famous for great vacations and the healing procedures you can partake in: mineral and mud baths. It's the central town beach in Tarragona province, about 170 m long and 90 m wide. The climate here is dry, Mediterranean and the nature is picturesque.

The water is azure, warm and clean. There are no high waves and wind. The beach is popular among locals, Spanish people from other parts of the beach and tourists from Europe. Palms grow on the coast, and many hotels operate here. The coastline and sea bottom are covered in golden sand. The descent is smooth, and deep waters don't start for quite some time. Perfect conditions for young and old tourists.

The beach is crowded, and you can frequently see families with young children. There is always a lot of visitors, but everyone will be able to find a spot for themselves. You can get to the town by bus, rented car, taxi or even on foot. You can also rent a bike if you want to admire the locality and the views.

The beach season on the coast of Spain falls on the period from May to October. The water and air temperature reaches the most comfortable levels, thereby guaranteeing tourists a perfect vacation.

Infrastructure

The infrastructure is well-developed and represented by rental stores where you can umbrellas and sunbeds. There's a parking lot. The beach is also comfortable for people with disabilities, as there are special pathways on the coast.

Playgrounds for children, showers, toilets, changing rooms are installed for visitors, rescue workers and a first-aid post operate here as well. Many rental stores have water vehicles and sports equipment in stock. People partake in golf, race walking, tennis, horse riding and bicycle riding on the coast.

Many cafes, bars and restaurants with local Catalan seafood operate on the coast. Besides the tasty food, these places arrange entertainment events and live music. There are also trattorias with Italian food, cafeterias, coffee houses and bistros with take-out. Supermarkets and shops are available nearby.

The promenade is wide, long and beautiful. There's night lighting, palms and unique trees grow here. The area is well-kept and clean, with communal services regularly cleaning the territory.

The beach has received the mark of quality for family tourism. The award was given by the Generalitat de Catalunya. It means that all the apartments, hotels, restaurants, cafes and other establishments on Calafell's territory are adapted to family needs. There are many attractions and leisure options. The European quality of the beach is proved by the Blue flag - the area is ecologically clean by the ISO 14001 standard.

Useful information

Calafell is the gem of Spain and a fashionable balneological resort. The sanatorium is located near the healing springs and healing mud. The sea here has the biggest iodine concentration.

Those who crave adrenaline should visit Diver Ludic - an amusement park with attractions for tourists of all ages. And those who crave speed must visit Karting de El Vendrel.

The beach and the province have a lot of architectural monuments:

  • Ciutadella Ibérica – restored remains of the Iron Age;
  • The 11th century Santa Cruz Castle, which served as the defensive structure against the Ottoman Empire, with unique views of the surrounding area.
  • The Church of St. Mikel,
  • Iberian Citadel,
  • Many fisherman villages - the main architectural sights of the province.

A Medieval cemetery on a hill, with its necropolis visible on the way to the citadel, has also been preserved. There are many houses built in 14th to 18th centuries, wells, tanks, embrasures etc.
