Louniel beach

Louniel Beach is one of the few beaches covered with black sand. The reason for this is the active volcano Yasur. Black sand is the result of lava eruptions. At the moment, the volcano is in a stable calm state and the resort is completely safe. Louniel Beach is more suitable for outdoor activities than for the beach holidays.

Beach description

Louniel Beach is a surf beach located on the north side of the north-eastern part of Tanna Island in the small village of Louniel. Louniel beach is a black sand beach reminiscent of the beaches of the North Island of New Zealand, such as Piha and Muriwai. Even the ocean water seems black, but it is an illusion because of the black sand at the bottom, in fact the water is clear. The Lounjela beach is covered with large plantations of coconut palms and numerous trees. The tropical location of the beach makes the water temperature much warmer than in Australian surf waters. The beach itself is not even, but the access to it is gentle, which allows you to swim in the immediate vicinity of the shore. Black sand resembles a fine powder, with a slightly friable surface, in some places of the beach there may appear a feeling of failure. Underwater volcanic rocks, located above the water, divide the beach into several parts covered with wavy patterns. The estimate time of walking to the both ends of beach is about 1 hour.

You can get to the beach by a cross road from the plains of the Whitegrass to the junction in Middlebush. There the way to Fetukay leads downwards to the beach. The entire journey to the beach is a wonderful view of the vast tropical trees and high fern among the lush tropical forests. The beach side of the plain offers a beautiful view of the unusual Louniel Beach, with a smoky Jasur volcano background among the green hills.

Lounnel Beach is not suitable for children, high waves and frequent winds are the main feature of Tanna Island.

When is the best time to go?

From December to March, Vanuatu becomes restless: local residents and tourists can be disturbed by rains and hurricanes.  The best time to visit the islands is summer and early autumn, when the southeast trade winds slightly remove the heat.

Infrastructure

Tourism in Tann is only developing, so there are no sun loungers and parasols on the beach. However, there are more hotels and pensions on this island than on other Vanuatu islands. One of the most popular is White Grass Ocean Resort & Spa, with own swimming pool and restaurant. The hotel provides sightseeing trips to Yasur volcano and other Tanna beaches.

The waterfall, also called Lounel, and within walking distance to the beach, enjoys no less popularity on the island of Tanna.

Unlike the rest of Vanuatu, the road to Lounel Beach, like the rest of the island, is not in the best condition.

The most famous attraction on the island of Tanna is the unpredictable active Volcano Yasur, whose diameter is 360 m. At the moment, it does not spew lava and tours for tourists are conducted close to it. Inside the crater, a volcano splashes with lava, and in the dark it glows like a hot stone.
