Cabo Polonio beach

Cabo Polonio is a fishing settlement from which the name of the natural national park comes. It is a very secluded place in Uruguay, there is no electricity and running water there. Its residents still use candels.

Beach description

Cabo Polonio beach is covered with white sand and extends extends over 7 km. From the one side of the bay, still waters prevail, and from the other one, the wind blows constantly.

On the beach fenced with boulders, fur seals and lions dwell. Undoubtedly, their colonies raise curiousity. The coastal islands and the surrounding forests with fancy inhabitants became the treasury of natural national park.

In the 70s of the last century, Cabo Polonio was chosen by hippies who built simple shacks for themselves on the beach. In the settlement, there ar several shops and cafes by candlelight. Nevertheless, the benefits of civilization did not completely bypass these places. A couple of hostels have their own generators and even a cell tower. The most famous sight of this place is a lighthouse which functions as a viewpoint from 10 a.m.

It is not easy to get here. It takes 3.5 hours to get there by bus from the capital, then about half an hour by SUV through sandy dunes.

When is it better to go

The best time to travel to South America – from December to May. There is little rainfall during these months, the air warms up by an average of +28˚С, and the water temperature – from +21˚ to +23˚. Most Atlantic waters warm up in February, but this is the peak season on the coast. At this time, tourists from neighboring Argentina, Uruguay itself and tourists from all over the world choose these places for recreation.
