Jiquilillo beach

Jiquilillo is the most visited beach on the Pacific coastline of Nicaragua. Geographically, it is part of the Padre Ramos Estuary Nature Reserve, which protects the unique mangrove forests of Central America. Next to it there is a small village, the economic basis of which is sea fishing. Even a short stay in Jiquilillo promises active surfing, interesting excursions, participation in volunteer programs, and, of course, a pleasantly relaxing tropical beach rest.

Beach description

Jiquilillo Beach is one of the longest Pacific beaches in Central America. It is located in the province of Chinandaga, on the peninsula of Punta Caliente. There are several ways to get to the beach:

  1. By bus from Leon to Chinandega, and then transfer to another bus, going directly to Jiquilillo.
  2. By bus, going from Potosi to Chinandegi and getting out at the Jiquilillo crossroads.
  3. By a rented car.

The beach strip of Jiquilillo is covered with soft sand of caramel hue and is framed by tall palm trees from one side, and by a cozy picturesque bay from the other.

There are no Wi-Fi, ATMs or other modern attributes of the civilized world on the territory of Jiquilillo Beach. People come here mainly to rest from the bustle of the city, swimming in the ocean or resting in a hammock and contemplating beautiful sunsets. Of active entertainment for tourists on the beach of Jiquilillo are available:

  • surfing;
  • kayaking;
  • volcano hiking;
  • horse ridings along the coastline;
  • cultural excursions to nearby cities.

The remoteness from civilization leaves its special imprint on the Jiquilillo beach and the neighboring fishing village. Everything here is proceeding slowly, as if time had stopped or slowed down. There is no usual set of beach services on the beach, and it’s useless, because here it is never too crowded. And that small number of tourists, who drop in here, experience special pleasure from free outdoor rest.

Infrastructure

Nevertheless, Jiquilillo beach cannot be called wild; there are:

  • several restaurants, serving national cuisine dishes and beer;
  • surf equipment rental centers;
  • surf school.

The Jiquilillo beach area also has several hostels and hotels, where it is possible to stay overnight. In addition to simple, but comfortable housing, hostels and hotels often have a swimming pool, library, equipment rental, excursions are conducted.

Spending time on Jiquilillo Beach is worth taking a great opportunity to try some unique things:

  • coconut bread, baked in a fishing village;
  • climb the volcanic peak;
  • spend a day in a hammock, relaxing and forgetting about oppressive worries;
  • meet tropical sunset in the Pacific;
  • help volunteers at night release hatched turtles into the ocean;
  • visit the local fish market, arranged at sunrise directly on the beach;
  • practice yoga and try to learn spanish.

Jiquilillo, like other Nicaraguan Pacific beaches, of course, is inferior in quality to popular resorts and surfing beaches. Nevertheless, thanks to the virgin nature, it remains a cozy and quiet place, desired by everyone, who is looking for romance, solitude, great waves and small adventures.
