Maderas beach

Maderas Beach (Playa Maderas) is one of the most famous Pacific beaches in Nicaragua. It owes its popularity primarily to surfers, who recognize it as the best place for surfing in the Central American region. But also those, who come here just to enjoy the tropical sunset, lie on the beach or swim in the beautiful bay, agree that this is a heavenly spot for a beach rest. Playa Maderas is located in the southern part of the country, a 20-minute drive from the resort town of San Juan del Sur.

Beach description

Playa Maderas is a wide sand strip, protected from the mainland by the jungle and abutting a cliff formation in the north. From both sides, Playa Maderas is bordered by other famous beaches - Playa Majagual and Playa Marsella. The coastal area of the beach has a sloping slope into the ocean with a small strip of shallow water, which makes entering the water in this area very convenient.

Since trade winds blow almost 300 days a year in this region, the ocean is always lumpy in the coastal area of Playa Maderas, forming waves of different strengths. Surfers of all levels do not miss this opportunity, coming here to ride the waves.

During low tide, visitors of the beach can also spend time actively, doing:

  • scuba diving (scuba diving);
  • sport fishing;
  • kayaking;
  • hiking and horseback riding along the beach.

In addition, visitors of the beach are offered boat cruises and sails on catamarans with a stop at secluded beaches to sunbathe and swim.

Due to the fact that the Playa Maderas beach remains not crowded even during high season, this place is ideal for people, enjoying solitude and relaxation, as well as couples, looking for romance and new unusual experiences.

It is possible to get to the beach from the town of San Juan del Sur for 20 minutes by bus, taxi, rented car (cross-country vehicle). The trip from the Nicaraguan capital Managua to the beach will take approximately 3 hours. It is also possible to get to Playa Maderas by boat or yacht, which can be even more convenient than by car: due to bad road conditions.

When is the best time to go?

The best time to visit Nicaragua regarding the weather is the months from October to January, when the rains have already ended and the dry season has not yet arrived. However, keep in mind that many Americans come to Nicaragua for Christmas and New Year, which affects the price level.

Infrastructure

Playa Maderas is still an pristine beach. However, in the absence of a standard beach infrastructure, Playa Maderas has:

  • restaurants and bars, where it is possible to have a snack with local seafood, drink beer, lie in a hammock;
  • 2 shops, renting out and selling sports equipment for surfing;
  • Rebelde surfing school, giving private and group lessons.

Right on the beach and next to it, there are several hotels, campsites and hostels, offering various accommodation options. For example, eco-resort HulaKai, offering comfortable rooms and additional services. More affordable in price proportions will be accommodation in a hostel or in a tent on the campsite. Near the beach, on Chocolata Road, there is a market - Angelita's, where it is possible to buy local products.
