Las Peñitas beach

The coastline of Las Penitas is about 5 km long, covered with soft black sand and large rocks, on which it is pleasant to sit and watch the ocean. On weekdays, the beach is very uncrowded, almost empty, so you feel easy and free here. At the weekend, locals come to the beach, so there are a little more people here. The ocean in the Las Penitas region is boiling and bubbling, so waves of different strengths are present almost constantly. Reaching the coast, they break on cliffs, leaving only foam, rocks and shells on the coastline.

Despite the turbulent nature of the ocean, the water here is very warm and pleasant. On days, when the ocean calms down a bit, visitors of the beach can even take a bath by going into the water at the end of the beach.

In addition to surfing, there is other active entertainment on the beach:

• sea fishing;
• kayaking;
• boat tours to the Juan Venado nature reserve, located on the island;
• horseback riding;

Of the passive leisure options, visitors of the beach are invited to lie in a hammock and drink drinks, prepared in a nearby bar.

It is possible to get to Las Penitas beach in 15-30 minutes using:

• a rented car and leaving Leon;
• a regular bus, departing from the bus station El Mercadito;
• by taxi.

When is the best time to go?

The best time to visit Nicaragua regarding the weather is the months from October to January, when the rains have already ended and the dry season has not yet arrived. However, keep in mind that many Americans come to Nicaragua for Christmas and New Year, which affects the price level.
