Beach description

Sylt is mostly preferred by well-to-do German tourists. They are attracted by a rare feeling of space and freedom, numerous oyster farms and endless sand beaches stretching all along the shore.

The many kilometers long coastal line is covered with snow white sand and surrounded with picturesque dunes among which special paths and wooden bridges are laid. The beach is equipped with water closets, changing cabins and nice wicker cabins protecting from sun and wind. The sea is crystal clear and cool, and water temperature doesn't exceed 20 C. However, there are always many beachgoers here in summer season: people walk along the beach, take sun baths, engage in surfing and kiteboarding which are very popular here. Waves on Sylt west beach are rather specific (locals call them "svellas"): they can appear without any strong wind, reach only 50 m in terms of length, and are not too strong. Surfers were the first people to make this beach fashionable and to turn it into Mecca for rich and handsome people. Starting from 1970ies, sports competitions and noisy youth parties have been held here that became the specialty of Buhne 16.

Beside surfers, this beach is often visited by families with small kids and mature couples. Kids willingly swarm in the sand and makes sand pies, and adults play football and volley-ball, enjoy water games, or take sun baths. The beach is equipped with water closets, shower stalls and sling chairs, it also has special wicker cabins to change and to hide from sun and wind.

It's as crowded at Buhne 16 in the evening: older visitors go to beach restaurants, and young people party hard in bars and discos till the morning. Many people go for a walk to the neighboring Campen beach with the coolest parties on the beach, where you can meet European celebrities. Many celebrities own real estate on Sylt teh average price of which is within the range from 3 to 5 mln Euros.

It should be also noted that Buhne 16 is the first nudist beach in Germany taht received its official status back in 1920. Recently, the center of naturists' life moved to Campen where gay clubs and other non-traditional establishments started opening, and these places became home to real valuers of full unity with nature, and spirit and body freedom. They are mostly represented by young athletic guys and slim maidens with long hair waving in the breeze, although there are also elderly people who were almost pioneers of young nudist movement. The beach size allow all visitors to feel cozy and comfortable and to pay no special attention to the fact whether clothes are present. Beach police monitors order and is merciless in fines for decency break, or inappropriate behavior.
