Westerland Beach

Westerland Beach is the largest seaside resort on the North Sea in Westerland. This island is recognizable on the map, because it has the shape of a dancing ballerina on pointe shoes, and it has become a symbol of the island. Thanks to the excellent organization of tourism in this area, the resort received the popular name "Beverly Hills" in Germany. Evening promenades along the coast of the North Sea during sunset will leave an unforgettable experience of visiting this beach.

Beach description

The Westerland Beach is located in the middle of Sylt, on the Friedrichstrasse. You can reach the island by train. It's impossible to get to the beach by car, you will need to use the train that transports cars to the island, it goes to Sylt from Niebull, alternatively you can take the ferry from the Danish island Reme. There's also an airport on Sylt that welcomes local flights.

The beach is about 6km long and the overall shoreline is 40 km long. White sands and a smooth descent into water allows for comfortable family vacations with children. However, check the weather report first, as the winds in this part of Germany are particularly frequent. Rescuers work here during Summer. For a comfortable relaxation you can rent a deck chair-house that resembles a small colorful matchbox or, as the locals call it, "a beach basket with a hood".

As many as 4000 of those baskets can appear simultaneously during the high season. Curiously enough, you can only see this sort of beach equipment in Germany. And the main reason is the constantly changing weather. So, for visitors' comfort, this closed deck chair was invented. It protects from the sun, winds and drizzle.

Westerland Beach is unique in its nature because the sea constantly changes the area of the island, changing the beach as well. Which is why Westerland always looks different.

When is the best time to go?

The best time to visit the beaches of Germany is July-August, when the Baltic Sea becomes warm enough for swimming, but the air is still cool enough for excursions.
