Ventspils beach

The resort town of Ventspils, situated 200 km from the capital, boasts over a kilometer of pristine white sand. It's no surprise that the beach has been honored with the prestigious Blue Flag award.

Beach description

The entry into the sea is smooth, yet the depth increases just 10 meters from the shore. The beach is naturally sheltered on both sides: towering sand dunes, rising almost 20 meters above the sea, protect it from the wind, while a stone pier extends nearly a kilometer into the sea. At the end of the pier, there is a viewing platform from which visitors can enjoy breathtaking sunsets.

Rescuers vigilantly monitor the beachgoers. During the peak season, Ventspils beach becomes quite crowded. To ensure everyone has a pleasant experience, the beach is sectioned into designated areas. There is a separate area for smokers, as smoking is prohibited on the main beach. Surfers and kiters have their own zone, with a generous half-kilometer stretch reserved for them. Additionally, the beach boasts numerous playgrounds equipped with slides and swings.

Ventspils is also home to an aquapark, offering warm water fun for children and adults alike throughout the year, a welcome alternative to the chilly Baltic Sea. Travel to Ventspils is convenient, with buses departing from Riga for a 3-hour journey. For the more adventurous, excellent bicycle paths make the trip from Riga to Ventspils an enjoyable ride.

When is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit Latvia for a beach vacation is during the summer months, when the weather is warmest and the days are longest. Specifically, the period from June to August offers the most favorable conditions for beachgoers. Here's why:

  • June: The start of the summer brings about moderate temperatures and fewer crowds. It's a great time to enjoy the serenity of Latvia's beaches.
  • July: Peak season arrives in July, with the warmest weather, averaging around 20°C (68°F). The Baltic Sea becomes pleasantly warm for swimming.
  • August: The warm weather continues, and the water temperature is at its highest. However, as August progresses, the number of visitors starts to decrease, making it a perfect time for those seeking a quieter beach experience.

Regardless of the month you choose, Latvia's beaches, such as those in Jūrmala, offer beautiful white sands and picturesque sunsets. Just remember that even in summer, the Baltic climate can be unpredictable, so it's wise to pack layers and be prepared for the occasional rainy day.
