Saunders beach

This beach is located on the north coast of New Providence, about 6 km east of Cable Beach. The white sandy area is surrounded by green tropical trees, and the tweets of bright outlandish birds add color to this amazing palette of Bahamian reality. A huge plus of this place is that when you come here, you find more local islanders on the shore rather than tourists. This is especially true for holidays and weekends. But every experienced traveler knows what to rest, eat and drink in a new and unknown place should be where the indigenous people do it. So go ahead! There is no better place in Bahamas to find.

Beach description

Calm clear water is perfect for swimming (however, don't forget about sharp corals under your feet), and white sand is perfect for sunbathing, sleeping, and relaxation. Saunders Beach has several artificially protected bays along the site which make it perfect for family swimming.

The beach atmosphere is also very calm because this place stays away from the city and business activities, and there are no hotels nearby. So only people dreaming of real Bahamian "cream" get here. Sonders Beach can be called a family beach because the share of visitors with children in relation to total number of tourists is the highest here. This happens for the following reasons:

  • first, areas with even bottom and small depth protected from waves become perfect swimming pools for kids;
  • second, there is a small number of beachgoers here, so this place has no fuss, and the child won't be lost anywhere;
  • third, there are no noisy crowds of young people that could strike a defiant demeanor  and drink alcohol, at Saunders.

If you go westwards (along West bay Street) along the sand site, you will quickly reach the bend famous as "Go Slow Bend". If you look westwards from here, you will see the picturesque resort coastline with fashionable hotels, luxury yachts and vessels.

When is the best time to go?

Holidays in the Bahamas are good at any time of the year, but the busy season is in the period from mid-November to May. The Bahamas are disposed quite low in relation to sea level, so the wind blows in the winter months, but it is gentle and soberly pleasant. The air temperature is between 27-29 degrees from the end of autumn to the beginning of summer. Traveling with children, it is better to come in the autumn months, while the spring is more appropriate to go for new emotions, and peacefully enjoy the sunshine – in winter.

Infrastructure

Despite the relative "abandonment" of the beach, there is still a children's playground with swings, slides, etc. Those amenities were added a few years ago:

  • toilet;
  • changing rooms;
  • showers;
  • a parking lot.

However, there are no sun loungers available for rent, and there are no water ski operators. There are also no hotels around, so the beach remains quiet and not crowded. Places where you can stay overnight are located in relative distance. For example, Blue Water Resort at Cable Beach.

Food is usually not provided here, although sometimes on the shore you can still see sellers offering hot Bahamian local food. If you want something more substantial, go through the street and see a shopping center that has a good Chinese restaurant, a liquor store, a pharmacy, etc. Pizza hut and KFC are nearby. There is a convenience store across the road at Shell gas station.

Useful information

  1. To get to the beach quickly, you can rent a taxi or scooter directly from the center of Nassau. Another convenient but more economical option is to take the bus Jitney #10 from the center of Nassau (about 10 minutes for $1.50), which passes by Sonders Beach and goes on to Cable Beach.
  2. A visit to Sonders Beach an be combined with a visit to Charlotte Fort, which is 2.6 km east of the beach, and Ardastra Gardens & Zoo, which is located 1.7 km east of the beach.
  3. There are no mid-range hotels near the beach - either budget offers with the corresponding "filling" in the rooms, or fashionable hotels in which the price per night can reach $ 1000. Therefore, if you have a tent, be sure to take it with you to Sonders Beach, since there is a free and spacious camping near the beach.
  4. The best time to relax is winter, because at this time the Bahamas has a dry season, which means it will delight you with the weather and temperature every day. Avoid planing your vacation in the Bahamas during the rainy season - you run the risk of sitting in your room all the time, as you will not be able to swim or go on an excursion.
