Saunders beach

This beach is situated on the north coast of New Providence, approximately 6 km east of Cable Beach. The pristine white sands are framed by lush tropical trees, while the songs of vibrant, exotic birds add splashes of color to the already stunning Bahamian landscape. A significant advantage of this location is that upon your arrival, you're more likely to encounter local islanders along the shore rather than tourists. This is particularly the case during holidays and weekends. However, every seasoned traveler knows that to truly experience rest, cuisine, and culture in a new and unfamiliar place, one should follow the lead of the locals. So, venture forth! There is no finer place in the Bahamas to discover.

Beach description

Calm, clear waters are perfect for swimming (however, don't forget about the sharp corals under your feet), and the pristine white sand is ideal for sunbathing, sleeping, and relaxation. Saunders Beach boasts several artificially protected bays along the site, making it perfect for family swimming.

The beach atmosphere is also very calm because this place is removed from the hustle and bustle of the city and business activities, with no hotels nearby. Thus, only those dreaming of the real Bahamian "cream" venture here. Saunders Beach can be aptly described as a family beach, given that the proportion of visitors with children relative to the total number of tourists is the highest here. This is due to several reasons:

  • First, areas with an even bottom and shallow depth, protected from waves, become perfect swimming pools for kids;
  • Second, the small number of beachgoers ensures a tranquil environment, reducing the likelihood of a child getting lost;
  • Third, the absence of noisy crowds of young people who might exhibit unruly behavior or consume alcohol, makes Saunders a peaceful retreat.

If you head westwards along West Bay Street, skirting the sandy shore, you will soon reach the curve known as "Go Slow Bend". Gazing westward from this vantage point, you can behold the picturesque resort coastline adorned with fashionable hotels, luxury yachts, and vessels.

When is the best time to go?

The best time to visit Nassau for a beach vacation is largely dependent on the traveler's preferences for weather, crowds, and local events. However, there are certain periods that offer an optimal balance for most visitors.

  • Late April to Early June: This period is ideal as it follows the busy winter season, meaning fewer crowds and more affordable accommodations. The weather is warm and sunny, perfect for beach activities, with average temperatures ranging from 70°F to 80°F (21°C to 27°C).
  • November to Mid-December: Another great time to visit, this window offers comfortable temperatures and is before the holiday rush, so beaches are less crowded. It's also a good time for those looking to enjoy outdoor activities without the intense summer heat.
  • Off-Peak Season (Late June to November): While this is the Atlantic hurricane season, it can be a gamble with potential storms. However, if you're willing to take the risk, there are deals to be had, and the beaches are at their quietest.

Ultimately, the best time for a beach vacation in Nassau is when the weather is warm, and the crowds are manageable, making late spring and early fall ideal choices for many travelers.

Infrastructure

Despite the relative "abandonment" of the beach, it still boasts a children's playground complete with swings, slides, and more. These amenities were added a few years ago:

  • Toilets
  • Changing rooms
  • Showers
  • Parking lot

However, sun loungers are not available for rent, and water ski operators are absent. With no hotels in the immediate vicinity, the beach remains tranquil and uncrowded. Accommodations can be found at a relative distance, such as the Blue Water Resort at Cable Beach.

While food is not typically provided on the beach, occasionally vendors can be spotted selling hot Bahamian local cuisine. For those seeking more dining options, a nearby shopping center offers a variety of choices, including a reputable Chinese restaurant, a liquor store, and a pharmacy. Fast-food favorites like Pizza Hut and KFC are also in close proximity. For convenience, there is a store across the street at the Shell gas station.

Useful information

  1. To get to the beach quickly, you can rent a taxi or scooter directly from the center of Nassau. Another convenient but more economical option is to take the bus Jitney #10 from the center of Nassau (about 10 minutes for $1.50), which passes by Sonders Beach and goes on to Cable Beach.
  2. A visit to Sonders Beach an be combined with a visit to Charlotte Fort, which is 2.6 km east of the beach, and Ardastra Gardens & Zoo, which is located 1.7 km east of the beach.
  3. There are no mid-range hotels near the beach - either budget offers with the corresponding "filling" in the rooms, or fashionable hotels in which the price per night can reach $ 1000. Therefore, if you have a tent, be sure to take it with you to Sonders Beach, since there is a free and spacious camping near the beach.
  4. The best time to relax is winter, because at this time the Bahamas has a dry season, which means it will delight you with the weather and temperature every day. Avoid planing your vacation in the Bahamas during the rainy season - you run the risk of sitting in your room all the time, as you will not be able to swim or go on an excursion.
