Tsukigahama beach
Tsukigahama, or Moon Beach, is a long sandy coast in the west of Iriomote Island, and it got its name due to its perfect crescent shape. But the shape isn't the only thing that attracts tourists here. The beach is covered in powder-like golden sand, and it makes a very specific sound that resembles crying when you walk on it. That's why the beach is also called the "crying sand beach".

Beach description
Unlike the other beaches on the island, there are no coral reefs here, and even though the sea bottom is sandy, the visibility isn't great if you venture too far from the shore. So if you're a snorkeling enthusiast, it's better to find a different, more suitable place. The solitude of this place also attracts visitors (the beach is almost never crowded), as well as relaxation among the impressive and untouched nature. Some stable waves are great for beginner surfers to learn the basics.
This beach is also ideal for romantics. Breathtaking and colorful sunset is one of the main features of Tsukigahama. There's also a legend about the hidden treasure of Kidd the Pirate on this beach. Tsukigahama is located near Urauchi village. The best way to get here is from the Uehara port (takes about 20 minutes by car).
When is the best time to go?
If in the north of Japan, in Hokkaido, the weather in January-February is quite wintery, in the southern islands the temperature rarely drops below 20 degrees even in the cold season. In summer, the rainy season comes in Japan, when the humidity becomes almost one hundred percent, and the thermometer is at 30 to 40 degrees. Therefore, the best time to travel to Japan – is late spring or early autumn.
