Yonaha Maehama beach

Yonaha Maehama is a very picturesque beach located on the southwest edge of Miyako Island. Due to the contrast of blindingly white sand and emerald transparent water the local landscapes feel truly heavenly. With its length reaching 7 km and with a small amount of visitors (tourists rarely come here), this beach seems like a lost piece of Japan's heaven. You can only get here by taxi or rented car.

Beach description

This is a great place for swimming, even for very young children. The shallow water and lack of high waves make vacations here very safe. But do be careful as you can encounter jellyfish underwater. You can rent a jet ski or book a yacht tour to truly appreciate the beauty of this place.

One of the most interesting local sights is located in the outskirts of Yohana Maehama, and that is the Ryugujo Observatory on the Kurima Island, connected to Miyako via a bridge. The building atop the hill resembles the Dragon Palace and has a very unique architecture. You can view all the breathtaking landscapes of Yohana Maehama from here, and it's even more beautiful during sunset.

When is the best time to go?

If in the north of Japan, in Hokkaido, the weather in January-February is quite wintery, in the southern islands the temperature rarely drops below 20 degrees even in the cold season. In summer, the rainy season comes in Japan, when the humidity becomes almost one hundred percent, and the thermometer is at 30 to 40 degrees.   Therefore, the best time to travel to Japan – is late spring or early autumn.
