Tourlida beach

If the usual beaches in the form of a coastal strip are already boring, and the soul asks for something like that, go to Turlida beach. It is a beach area on the island of the same name, where you can enjoy the inimitable Greek flavor, watch flocks of flamingos and try avgotaraho - “Greek caviar”, one of the best Greek delicacies that were delivered directly to the Ottoman Empire during the Turkish yoke.

Beach description

It is not a mainland beach, but an island beach that is connected to Mesolongi by a road, built at the end of XIX century. It is 5 km from the town, so many tourists prefer to stay in Mesolongi and come to Turlida on vacation.

The beach is a coastal area made of fine golden sand, which acquires an amazing orange shade in the sunset season. In combination with the red sun setting in the water, it creates a unique beautiful nature background for original photos. And if at this moment you can get a flock of flamingos - feel free to send your work to a travel magazine or photo contest! You must share such beauty with the world!

The island is located in shallow waters. Therefore, the beach is very shallow, the bottom is flat. Here the waters of the lagoon and the Ionian Sea are connected.

The beach is rather specious, so even if there a lot of tourists on it, this is not felt. However, it is quite popular, as it is considered a local landmark. And here you can plunge into the invigorating waters of salt lakes and get the procedure several times more useful and effective than spa salons provide.

When is the best time to go?

Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season  begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.

Infrastructure

Tourlida Beach is a clean, well maintained beach with developed infrastructure. There are sun loungers and African umbrellas, so that in a sultry noon there will be a place to hide. Two bars and a cafeteria offer hungry guests to enjoy dishes with eel, salted fish and shrimp, bottarga caviar, ouzo, tsipouro, locally made cheeses and incredibly large olives.

Wooden houses called pelades are the peculiarity of the island. However, if you are used to comfort and "civilization", it is better to rent a room in one of the Missolonghi hotels. For example, in Hotel Liberty Central Greece.

This is a fishing area, so you can also rent a fishing rod and try to catch your own catch. Boats are rented on the beach, so those who are bored of lying and swimming can rent a canoe and go to explore the island and the mainland from the sea.

It is called "Holy" because in 1826 it fell to the Turks and Egyptians, despite long resistance. The entire population that they tried to withdraw through the secret city gates was shot. In 1829, the Heroes Garden was built in the city, which contains statues and tombs of war heroes that have survived to this day. This is one of the main attractions of Mesolongi which tourists should visit. Lord Byron, who lived here in his last years and died of malaria, is buried here.

If you want to touch the "beautiful", visit:

The city offers not only a beach, but also a cultural vacation, so it lives a busy life all year round. Therefore, numerous hotels, cafes, bars and restaurants of the city work not only in the summer season, but also at other times of the year.
