Wategos beach

Wategos is one of the best holiday destinations in the Cape Byron Nature Reserve. People come here for picnics, kayaking, snorkeling and surfing. You will be delighted with the peaceful atmosphere of this beautiful and sheltered beach.

Beach description

You won't find the set of facilities on the beach:

  • water closets,
  • free BBQ kits,
  • picnic tables under tents,
  • washing rooms,
  • drinking water.

You'll also have a chance to explore the local sight, a 22-meter lighthouse standing on Cape Byron.

With regard of the fact that Wategos is not patrolled, and strong currents can occur along the beach, families with children need to follow safety at sea. Moreover, smoking and the presence of pets are prohibited on the beach situated in the reservation area.

Wategos is situated 2 km to the east from tje center of Byron Bay city. In order to get to the recreation area, you have to drive down Lawson Street to Lighthouse Road and follow the Wategos Beach pointer. The beach territory is equipped with a parking lot. Tourists are offered accomodation in Rummery Park camping or in one of Byron Bay cottages.

When is it better to go

The busiest swimming season in Australia lasts from December to February. In this summer, for the southern latitudes, the mainland heats up to 25-30 °C, in places up to 40 °C. In winter (June to August) the air is cooled down to 11 °C. May and September are considered the best beach months with a cloudless sky and not too active sun.
