Cane Garden beach

"I heard that everything is getting better, as they say, as soon as we set sail for Cane Garden Bay," the renowned American country musician Jimmy Buffett once sang about this idyllic spot. And it's no wonder: few places can match the perfect vacation vibes that Cane Garden Bay exudes. Tortola Island, the largest of the British Virgin Islands, is a haven for tourists who are not interested in business but are in search of the quintessential beach experience. Almost all experts and locals concur that Cane Garden Bay stands out as the finest among them.

Beach description

The bay is quite small, and the beach stretches in a thin strip along the entire shore. It is covered with fine, bright sand - both on the surface and underwater - so do not be afraid of hurting your legs against the bottom. Moreover, the descent into the water is smooth and gentle. The water in the Caribbean Sea is very warm, with temperatures rarely falling below 25 degrees Celsius. You will also be surprised by the clear and vibrant blue color of the water.

If the area away from the coast is a paradise for surfers, especially during the hurricane season, then closer to the shore, there are practically no big waves, allowing you to safely swim with your children. Coral reefs are located in the depths of the bay and are best explored with a boat or motorboat. There is a pier in the center of the beach, where you can moor or simply dive. The bay is close to the road near a small village, making it conveniently accessible from almost all parts of the island. It is separated from the beach by a green zone, so there is no need to worry about noise and dust.

If you prefer privacy or do not wish to spend a long time choosing a place to stay, it is better to arrive in the morning. Cane Garden is a popular destination for all ages, attracting both tourists and locals who tend to come out after lunch or in the afternoon. However, be mindful: bring a blanket for the sand, as renting sun loungers and umbrellas is not available year-round, unlike other beach amenities such as toilets, showers, and changing cabins.

When is it better to go?

The British Virgin Islands (BVI) are a tropical paradise, offering some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. To make the most of a beach vacation here, timing is important. The best time to visit is generally from December to April, when the weather is dry and sunny, making it perfect for beach activities.

  • December to April: This is the peak tourist season, with comfortable temperatures averaging around 25°C to 28°C (77°F to 82°F). The seas are calm, and the risk of rain is low, providing ideal conditions for sunbathing, swimming, and water sports.
  • May to November: These months constitute the off-peak season, with the possibility of rain and the potential for hurricanes. However, visitors during this time can enjoy fewer crowds and lower prices. It's worth noting that the hurricane season peaks from August to October, so careful planning and monitoring of weather forecasts are advised if traveling during this period.

Ultimately, for the quintessential beach vacation with the best weather and optimal beach conditions, aim for the peak season months. However, if you're looking for a more secluded experience and don't mind a bit of unpredictability in the weather, the off-peak season could be a great choice.

Useful information

Pay attention to the local attraction: a small factory Callwood for the production of rum. It is the oldest on the island, and they still use the original technology for the production of several types of this pirate drink at once. They will show you the thickets of sugarcane used in production, and huge containers for infusion, and directly the storage. The factory is located on the southern part of the island, and its owners are manufacturers of rum for four generations. It can be visited only by a pre-appointment call.
