Turtlе beach

Among the long list of popular beaches of the British Virgin Islands, you are unlikely to stumble upon Turtle Beach. If you ask the question “why,” the answer will be hidden in the history of the Necker island on which it is located. It was once uninhabited, but at the end of the seventies of the last century, it was bought by Richard Branson with the condition that within several years he should build a resort on it. The young millionaire at that time, who decided to impress his future wife with this act, kept his promise, and now the natural beauty of Turtle Beach is combined with developed infrastructure and a high level of service.

Beach description

The most part of the beach is situated in tree shadow: their surprisingly curved stems have not only aesthetic but also practical fucntion: there are hammocks between them. the band of light and soft sand several meters wide stretches from them to water. The ocean is so clean here that you can see who lives at big depth. The water entry is rather smooth and safe. there are no sharp drops, stones, or corals.

Strong winds are rather rare on Turtles Beach, and fresh breeze creating small ripples on water surface is more typical for these places. Due to the fact that the access to the island is limited by its owner (according to the rules, it cannot be visited by more than 35 persons at the same time), this beach is never crowded. Although, instead of people, you have a chance to meet the permanent island inhabitants: iguanas, searlet ibises, flamingos, lemurs, and sea turtles.

Of seven existing species of sea turtles, six are threatened with extinction: howeve, four of these species lay their eggs on the territory of Turtle Beach regularly. Having a rest on this beach, don't forget that it is restricted to disturb nests, or to touch small animals: specialists who are the members of “Save the turtles” program control the situation.

When is the best time to go?

Since the islands have a tropical climate, the air temperature during the year is practically unchanged and rarely drops below 24 degrees. The same temperature level is noted when determining the water temperature. The wettest and most comfortable months to stay – are from September to November, but the hurricane season also falls on the same period. Therefore, the best time to relax – is the beginning of December or May and the end of April.
