Macqueripe Bay beach

Macqueripe Bay is a unique beach, located at the same-name bay in the north-west edge of the island Trinidad. The specialness of this sandy coast is that during the tides it does not exist, the tidal waters hide it almost completely. But in the period of low tides it is a perfect place for families with children and exciting snorkeling. Also, the proximity to Port of Spain attracts people to resort of Trinidad.

Beach description

The shore of Macqueripe Bay is small. The length is just 117 m, and width is 16 m. What makes it attractive is a secluded location in a u-shaped bay. Because of that and also due to coast rocks in dense vegetation, the beach is completely protected from the wind and what it stands out with is still greenish waters. The big waves do not appear here. Dark-brown sand covers the whole shore and sea-floor, but there are also small pebbles in the sea waters.

While Macqueripe Bay is not the best beach of Trinidad, it is still popular among the tourists. It is quite crowded on the coast on weekends.

  • Families with small children come here because even during the period of low tides the waters are shallow and it is safe to swim far from the shore.
  • The still waters are clean and clear that attracts many snorkellers. It is even possible to dive with turtles here.

Though it is not safe to be on this beach during the tides. One should remember that it is a bay with deep waters, during the World War II there were submarines.

When is the best time to go?

In the mid and late summer (and sometimes fall) Trinidad and Tobago flooded by rains.  Therefore, the best time to travel is the beginning of the year, the months from February to May.

Infrastructure

It is hard to say that Macqueripe Bay has well-developed infrastructure. So do not expect any special conveniences.

  • The coast is very small, and it is better to come here early with your umbrellas and towels because there are no rental services.
  • There are no toilets on the beach, but there is a paying shower where you can wash off the sand. There is a lifeguard station near the shore, but they are not always on their duty.
  • You should care about the food too, when you come to this beach of Trinidad. But if you climb higher, you can a few cozy restaurants and cafes near the parking area, where you can have a good lunch.

There are no apartments for renting though you may find few comfortable mini-hotels in this region. The nearest to the coast (4.3 km) is a mini-hotel Crews Inn. While the beach is comparatively close to the island capital, you may stay at a hotel in Port-of-Spain and rent a car and spend a day to see its city breaks and the beach.
