Mayaro beach

Mayaro Beach is a huge beach on the east coast of Trinidad. It is loved for lush forests, clean air and soft sand. It is popular among introverts due to its low population and remoteness from large cities. There are also surfers, families with children, naturalists and active travelers.

Beach description

Mayaro Beach is the largest beach on the island of Trinidad. Its length exceeds 9 km and its width reaches 70 meters. It has the following advantages:

  1. location in a rural area, where there is no city noise, dirty air and a large number of vacationers;
  2. proximity to a rainforest inhabited by hundreds of birds and exotic animals;
  3. soft sand of white and dark cream color, on which you can safely walk barefoot;
  4. the presence of both lively coastal areas with developed infrastructure and desert locations where you can relax from the hustle and bustle;
  5. Mayaro remains half empty even on weekends and major holidays.

Lush palm trees and dense deciduous trees grow throughout the beach. You can have picnics in their shadows, set up camps and relax from the summer heat. Another decoration of Mayaro Beach are colorful villages located in its vicinity. There you can find grocery stores, sugarcane and cocoa plantations, rice fields and banana lands.

Some areas of the beach are characterized by sharp drops in depth. If you are looking for a place with safe swimming conditions, swim in the tourist areas of Mayaro. They are located near the largest restaurants and resorts. There are also large waves, the refreshing wind, the bright sun.

This place is ideal for surfing, family vacations, hiking. It is popular among fans of campsites, divers, single tourists. Here are ideal conditions for sunbathing, snorkelling, boat swims. There are also several colorful restaurants offering tortillas with shark meat and traditional Caribbean dishes on the beach.

A little tip: come here by car. It is easier to find a good place to relax with personal transport. It removes problems with a trip to the hotel and allows you to take with you an unlimited amount of food and drinks. In addition, you can wait out the rain or spend the night in the car.

When is the best time to go?

In the mid and late summer (and sometimes fall) Trinidad and Tobago flooded by rains.  Therefore, the best time to travel is the beginning of the year, the months from February to May.

Infrastructure

On the central section of the beach (in the village of Plaisance) is a cottage Sunny Daze Cottage. Its customers are offered the following amenities:

  • cozy rooms with a spacious kitchen and a private bathroom;
  • satellite TV and free Wi-Fi;
  • a quiet homely atmosphere.

There is a sports complex near the hotel, a Hindu temple and a dense forest that is ideal for walking.

The infrastructure of Mayaro Beach is represented by restaurants and guesthouses scattered across different parts of the coast. There are toilets, sun loungers, rubbish bins and food courts next to them. Several villages and towns adjoin the beach (Plaisance, St Margaret and others). There you can find grocery stores, supermarkets, markets, catering establishments and hotels.

The nearest large city (San Fernando) is located 66 km west of here. The following infrastructure facilities are located on its territory:

  5. Chinese, Italian restaurants, Mexican, Japanese and American (KFC) cuisines;
  6. movie theaters;

This city has many well-tended parks, a beautiful promenade, a viewing platform and monuments of colonial architecture. The "last train" is also stored here - an ancient railway transport that ran on the island in the past century.

The beach is located on the east coast of the island, 95 km southwest of the capital. It is recommended to get here by car or taxi (approximate cost: $80-110). There are several bus stops in the vicinity of Mayaro. However, local public transport runs intermittently.

Nariva National Park is located near the beach . It is famous for its lush forest, picturesque lakes and primordial nature. Hundreds of species of birds live here, as well as exotic species of frogs. This place is ideal for fishing and secluded relaxation away from civilization.

Families with children are advised to relax on the southern coast of Mayaro (near the village of Ortoire). There are several closed bays that protect tourists from strong waves and gales. Surfers and divers prefer the northern and eastern parts of the beach.
