Saint-Gilles-les-Bains beach
The quaint resort village of Saint-Gilles-les-Bains, nestled in the western part of Réunion, is encircled by the island's most exquisite beaches. The crowning jewel among them is Plage de L'Ermitage. Spanning seven kilometers, this coastline, though relatively narrow - particularly at high tide - is blanketed with pristine, snow-white sand intermingled with fragments of coral. Beneath the crystal-clear waters, coral reefs emerge, particularly visible during low tides. It is advisable to wear protective footwear to navigate these natural marvels safely.

Beach description
The beach is surrounded by lush pine trees, which come close to the shore and provide a thick, saving shade by midday. This allows you to stay here all day and have picnics in the shelter of the trees. However, to secure a comfortable spot and successfully park your car, it's advisable to arrive early, especially on weekends.
The beach is equipped with toilets and garbage cans, while lifeguards maintain order. You can enjoy a snack at a quaint cafe on the shore, and vendors with trolleys offer ice cream and cold drinks.
The sea in the beach area is shallow and relatively calm, although there are sometimes quite strong currents, about which the lifeguards will warn you. When the sea is tranquil, you can safely swim, snorkel, and observe the exotic sea creatures that have made their home on the local reefs.
When is the best time to go?
The best time to visit Reunion for a beach vacation is during the southern hemisphere's summer, which runs from November to April. This period offers warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine, ideal for beach activities.
- November to April: Peak Season - The weather is hot and humid, with occasional rainfall. This is the perfect time for sunbathing, swimming, and water sports.
- May to October: Off-Peak Season - Cooler and drier, this period is less suitable for beachgoers but great for those looking to explore the island's interior without the intense heat.
For the optimal beach experience, aim for the months of December to March, when the weather is at its best. However, be aware that this is also the cyclone season, so it's important to monitor weather forecasts and plan accordingly. Outside of the peak season, April and November can offer a good balance of pleasant weather and fewer crowds.
