Dune of Pilat beach

The Dune of Pilat is the largest sandy dune in Europe. Spanning 500 meters in width and towering at 130 meters in height, it is located 60 km southwest of the city of Bordeaux. Nearby, visitors can find a food court, several snack bars, souvenir shops, and car parking (which costs 4 euros for 2 hours).

The Dune of Pilat resembles the Arabian Desert, encircled by a vast water surface and dense forests. From its summit, one can enjoy a breathtaking view of a sandy expanse, the tiny islands dotting the Arcachon lagoon, and the lush parks of Aquitaine.

Beach description

The western part of the Dune of Pilat includes a beach with soft sand, lush greenery, and a vast territory. This area is particularly popular among married couples, thanks to its warm waters, gradual depth increase, soft seabed, and impeccable cleanliness.

A large wooden stairway leads to the top of the dune, where tourists regularly set up campgrounds to revel in the beauty of the surroundings and admire the starry sky. The sandy hill is also a favorite among paragliding enthusiasts. Once a year, they organize freestyle flying competitions, drawing participants and spectators alike.

Please note: While ascending the dune, your shoes may become clogged with sand. To avoid discomfort, it is advisable to bring several pairs of socks.

You can reach the Dune of Pilat by tour bus, personal car, or taxi.

When is the best time to go?

The French Atlantic coastline is a splendid destination for beach enthusiasts, offering a blend of beautiful landscapes, cultural experiences, and maritime pleasures. Determining the best time to visit for a beach vacation depends on several factors, including weather preferences and crowd tolerance.

  • Summer (June to August): This is the peak season, with the warmest weather and the most sunshine. July and August are particularly busy, as both international tourists and locals flock to the beaches. If you enjoy a vibrant atmosphere and don't mind the crowds, this is the ideal time to soak up the sun and enjoy water activities.
  • Spring (April to June): The weather begins to warm up, making it a pleasant time for those looking to avoid the summer crowds. The water might still be a bit cool for swimming, but it's a great time for beach walks and enjoying the coastal scenery.
  • Early Fall (September to October): The water remains warm enough for swimming, and the summer crowds have dissipated. This period offers a more tranquil beach experience with mild weather, ideal for those seeking relaxation.

Ultimately, the best time for a beach vacation on the French Atlantic coast is late June through early September, when the weather is most conducive to beach activities and the ocean is invitingly warm.
