Erretegia beach

Erretegia Beach, nestled in the southern part of New Aquitaine, is a gem within the Pyrénées-Atlantiques Department. It is situated near the charming resort town of Bidart and stands as the most picturesque and frequented beach in the area.

Beach description

Erretegia Beach, a hidden gem nestled at the foot of a lush, tree-covered hill, offers a serene escape for those seeking tranquility. A meandering path, blanketed with loose soil, winds its way to the shore. Caution is advised, as the trail can become treacherously slippery when wet; sturdy footwear is recommended. For individuals with disabilities, the neighboring beach to the north provides a more accessible and comfortable approach.

The unique shoreline is adorned with a blend of coarse sand and petite pebbles, reminiscent of pearl barley. This distinctive composition is a blessing on breezy days, as the sand remains grounded, sparing beachgoers from the annoyance of airborne grains. Visitors can comfortably forgo the rental of sunbeds, opting instead to recline on their own towels.

Equipped with essential amenities, the beach boasts toilets, shower stalls, a lifeguard station, and a quaint snack bar. The gentle waves beckon swimmers and surfers alike, while the expansive sands invite enthusiasts of beach volleyball and a variety of outdoor activities.

Just south of the cliff lies the Royal Pavilion Beach, flanked by a prestigious golf course. To the north, Erretegia shares its border with the bustling Bidart Center Beach, a stark contrast to its own peaceful atmosphere.

Optimal Visiting Times

  • The French Atlantic coastline is a splendid destination for beach enthusiasts, offering a blend of beautiful landscapes, cultural experiences, and maritime pleasures. Determining the best time to visit for a beach vacation depends on several factors, including weather preferences and crowd tolerance.

    • Summer (June to August): This is the peak season, with the warmest weather and the most sunshine. July and August are particularly busy, as both international tourists and locals flock to the beaches. If you enjoy a vibrant atmosphere and don't mind the crowds, this is the ideal time to soak up the sun and enjoy water activities.
    • Spring (April to June): The weather begins to warm up, making it a pleasant time for those looking to avoid the summer crowds. The water might still be a bit cool for swimming, but it's a great time for beach walks and enjoying the coastal scenery.
    • Early Fall (September to October): The water remains warm enough for swimming, and the summer crowds have dissipated. This period offers a more tranquil beach experience with mild weather, ideal for those seeking relaxation.

Ultimately, the best time for a beach vacation on the French Atlantic coast is late June through early September, when the weather is most conducive to beach activities and the ocean is invitingly warm.

Useful information

Bidart surroundings are incredibly interasting and picturesque, they would be totally perfect for hiking or cycling. It would be better to determine routes as well as use the services of a guide in local travel agencies One of the most popular destinations is a route along the Silver coast from Bidart to Biarritz, an old port city that has preserved the amazing atmosphere of the Napoleonic era to the present day. Today, it one of the most prestigious resorts in France and its status is equivalent to the status of Saint-Tropez. The symbol of Biarritz and its peculiar calling card, is a giant Virgin Mary Statue, for which Eiffel himself designed the pedestal. The sculpture is set on a rocky cliff, from which there is an amazing view of the city and the Bay of Biscay. You can get to the observation deck using a pedestrian bridge, a walk along which can be a real test for people who have a fear of heights and open space.
