Beach description
Located between the bustling La Rochelle marina and the verdant Minimes cape, enveloped by a dense pine forest, Minimes Beach offers a sandy expanse that is both lengthy and broad. A prominent breakwater visually separates the beach into two distinct zones.
- The first zone, adjacent to the harbor, is a haven for enthusiasts of active water sports. However, swimmers may find the area challenging due to the sharp stones scattered along the seabed. Consequently, visitors often choose to stroll along the shoreline or savor the stunning vistas while enjoying the local cuisine at the array of restaurants lining the promenade.
- The second zone begins at the breakwater and stretches to the forest's edge at the base of Cape Horn. This section buzzes with activity, attracting numerous families with young children, for whom a variety of amenities are thoughtfully provided. The beach boasts equipped facilities, including shower stalls, changing rooms, and restrooms. Additionally, there are playgrounds for children and sports areas, as well as accessible ramps for individuals with disabilities. While sunbeds and umbrellas are available for a fee, vigilant lifeguards ensure the safety of beachgoers, and an emergency station is conveniently situated near the entrance.
When is the best time to visit?
The French Atlantic coastline is a splendid destination for beach enthusiasts, offering a blend of beautiful landscapes, cultural experiences, and maritime pleasures. Determining the best time to visit for a beach vacation depends on several factors, including weather preferences and crowd tolerance.
- Summer (June to August): This is the peak season, with the warmest weather and the most sunshine. July and August are particularly busy, as both international tourists and locals flock to the beaches. If you enjoy a vibrant atmosphere and don't mind the crowds, this is the ideal time to soak up the sun and enjoy water activities.
- Spring (April to June): The weather begins to warm up, making it a pleasant time for those looking to avoid the summer crowds. The water might still be a bit cool for swimming, but it's a great time for beach walks and enjoying the coastal scenery.
- Early Fall (September to October): The water remains warm enough for swimming, and the summer crowds have dissipated. This period offers a more tranquil beach experience with mild weather, ideal for those seeking relaxation.
Ultimately, the best time for a beach vacation on the French Atlantic coast is late June through early September, when the weather is most conducive to beach activities and the ocean is invitingly warm.

Infrastructure
Since the beach is located almost within the city, it is easy to get there. Every fifteen minutes, the so-called "sea buses" for 1.5 euros per person run from the Old Port to it. There is also a good road to Plage des Minimes, which leads to a large, free parking area.
Stella Maris Lane stretches along the beach, leading to the lighthouse and skirting the entire cape. Along this lane, you'll find restaurants, shops, travel agencies, and bike and sports equipment rentals. Closer to the park, luxurious private residences stand majestically.
In summer, the so-called "botels" are in demand in La Rochelle: these are yachts moored in the harbor or well-equipped modern boats rented out to tourists as accommodations. Guests are offered well-equipped, comfortable cabins, kitchenettes with modern appliances, and shower stalls with personal care items. Typically, a party area with a TV, bar, and dance floor is organized on board. Additionally, there is the option to embark on an exciting sea voyage or go fishing for an additional fee. Prices for accommodation in botels are comparable to those of standard hotels, but each year, more guests wish to settle on the water and feel like real "sea wolves."
Among the standard accommodation options, there is an aparthotel which is the closest to the beach: Résidence New Rochelle. It attracts tourists with its convenient location and excellent service. Guests are offered modern studios with kitchenettes and spacious balconies. The property features a swimming pool with a relaxation area and a bar, a shady garden with hammocks and lawn chairs, and a sports and children's playground. Within walking distance from the hotel, there are shops, restaurants, and bakeries. It takes a leisurely half-hour walk to reach the main attractions of La Rochelle.

It would be an unaffordable mistake not to visit unique attractions with which the city and its surroundings are literally packed. Everything here is literally full of history, starting with the Old Town, with its narrow paved streets and thick fortified walls, and ending with the old fort, which survived many sieges at the time.
The Old port is incredibly attractive because of its laconic medieval beauty with its famous ancient towers that are the hallmark of the city. For 9 euros it is possible to visit all three towers and get up to the observation deck, which offers an amazing view of the city.
In La Rochelle, there are a lot of interesting museums, including the most popular Museum of Fine Arts, the Maritime Museum and the Museum of Natural History surrounded by a gorgeous park with live peacocks walking along the alleys. A local aquarium, that is one of the largest in Europe, deserve particular attention.
And of course, you should go for amazing sea walk on boat to the famous Fort Boyard. During the two-hour excursion, tourists will be able to see the ancient fortification from all sides, as well as enjoy the scenic islands of Ile d'Ex and Oleron, located in the nearby sea.
