Potokaki, the largest beach on Samos, boasts a stunning coastline that stretches nearly 4 km, with its eastern edge skirting the airport. This expansive beach offers a diverse array of zones, from bustling, lively areas to tranquil, secluded spots. Visitors of all preferences will discover activities that resonate with their tastes. Notably, Potokaki has been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag on multiple occasions, a testament to its exceptional quality and pristine conditions.

Beach description

Potokaki Beach extends from Pythagorio, passes by Potokaki, and culminates at Ireon village. The sandy shore gently slopes into the depths, while on land, patches of pebbles of various sizes mingle with the sand. The water is often calm, providing a very comfortable swimming experience. On windy days, the breeze mainly blows out to sea, ensuring that large waves are a rarity.

The eastern part of the shore is more populated and well-organized, with some hotels situated right on the waterfront. Amenities such as showers, changing cabins, and restrooms are readily available. The beach offers all the conveniences for holidaymakers:

  • Complimentary parking;
  • Sun loungers and umbrellas;
  • Sports equipment for water activities;
  • A well-maintained volleyball court and a treadmill;
  • Various catering establishments;
  • Facilities for individuals with disabilities;
  • Accessible public transport.

The beach's western end retains a more untouched appearance, offering secluded spots where one can swim and sunbathe in relative solitude. The warm sea, coupled with the absence of dangerous depths and waves, makes the beach particularly suitable for families with children.

Adventurers and those seeking an active holiday can engage in volleyball matches, try water skiing, ride on "bananas," and afterwards, visit quaint bars and taverns. They can also stroll among olive groves and delve into ancient ruins.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Samos for a beach vacation is typically during the summer months, from June to September. During this period, the weather is most favorable for beach activities, with warm, sunny days and minimal rainfall.

  • June: The beginning of the summer offers pleasant temperatures, fewer crowds, and the opportunity to enjoy the island's natural beauty in relative peace.
  • July and August: These are the hottest months, perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and water sports. However, these are also the busiest times, so expect more tourists and higher prices.
  • September: As the summer winds down, the temperatures remain warm but the island becomes less crowded, making it an ideal time for visitors seeking a more relaxed atmosphere.

Regardless of the month you choose, Samos' stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant coastal towns offer a memorable vacation experience. To avoid the peak tourist season while still enjoying good weather, consider the shoulder months of June and September for the best balance of comfort and tranquility.
