Beach description

Faros beach is situated in the center of a fishermans village of the same name 7 km away from Apollonia, the capital of Sifnos island. Before 1883, a port with a lighthouse existed in this village, that gave a name to the beach ("faros" means "lighthouse" in Greek). By the way, this port was considered the most safe on the Greek coast. And the lighting house remains the resort carte-de-visite.

Faros is a small picturesque beach stretching for 70 meters and divided into three conditional beaches:

  • The central beach of Faros is situated in the end of the asphalted road leading to the sea, and has a wonderful view of Krissopigi rock. Close to this part of the beach, there are restaurants, taverns, and cafeterias.
  • Glifo is situated on the right part of Faros beach. This part of the beach is desert, it's never too crowded. This side of Faros is beautiful, decorated with night lights and the newly restored path leading to Apokofto Beach and Krissopigi monastery.
  • Fassolu is situated on the left side of Faros Beach, and you can get there by the path starting from the Central beach near the bus station. A restaurant is open in this part of the beach. Moreover, Fassolu is close to a secluded rocky beach of Aspra Gremna.

Crystal clear bay waters of magic emerald color are calm and perfect for swimming. But Aegean Sea in this part of the island is not as safe for children as other parts of Sifnos because its depth grows dramatically here. the beach is located in a small bay which is very well protected from winds and high waves. Faros and its sea bottom are covered with a dense layer of soft yellow sand. And luxuriant trees give the quiet beach their rich natural shadow.

When is the best time to go?

Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season  begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.

Infrastructure

Faros Beach is famous for its environment of many taverns, restaurants, hotels, apartments and studios. One of the popular places among tourists is a family hotel Fassolou Studios, located just 120 m from the beach. The hotel complex consists of three two-storey buildings that have different architecture, but they all have a fabulous view of the endless Aegean Sea. Walking paths, stone walls, well-kept flowerbeds and cobblestone alleys carry visitors to the old romantic times. The hotel has a beautiful colorful garden with many trees and plants, providing freshness and coolness even on the hottest summer day. The hotel also has own restaurant and bar.

A small stone theater has recently been built on the left side of Faros; locals call it the Little Faros Theater. Now in this part of the beach various entertainment events, concerts and theatrical performances are often held.

A significant problem of the beach is the small parking: it is especially problematic in the summer.

Useful information

The island of Sifnos attracts with its historical values, and near Faros there are also interesting and unique sights. On the western side of the bay are the ruins from the facilities for transporting and processing ore in Lavrio. And directly above them on the top of the hill is the village church of Agios Ioannis, from this point a picturesque panoramic view of the beaches of Apokofto and Faros, as well as Chrysopigi rock opens.

By the way, the latter is located at the port entrance, and the monastery of Panagia Chrysopigi, built in 1650, was erected on it. The view of this church is extraordinary and breathtaking.

In the past, Faros was a vibrant settlement of potters, but the potteries, unfortunately, do not work very much nowadays. But clay products are sold everywhere, local residents organize small production right in the walls of their houses.
